Jim Cummings has had a rough few weeks in the Disney conversation. This week, he pushed back on part of it.
Context matters here because none of this happened in isolation.
Last month, the 2026 Disney Legends class was announced at D23 without him. He responded by resharing fan posts about the omission and adding his own line: “40 years. 1500 characters. The voice of generations. No comment.”
That drew its own backlash. Some fans defended him. Others argued that airing it publicly pulled attention from the eleven people actually inducted.
Then came Darkwing Duck. Speaking to Collider at the Coyote vs. Acme premiere, Cummings revealed he would not be returning for the reboot, and one line traveled everywhere.
He now says that line was not what people think.
The Post
Cummings addressed it on Facebook, alongside a video recap of a Disney Cruise Line sailing.
“While I was being muted, clipped and misquoted about Disney ‘getting what they deserve’… I was actually busy giving Disney exactly what they deserve, a whole lot of love,” he wrote.
“Thank you, Disney Dream, for a wonderful Scandinavian adventure this past week.”
He added a broader note. “Maybe we could all be a little less quick to judge, a little less eager to dredge up false stories, and keep a little more joy in our hearts.”
The video shows him performing several of his famous character voices during the cruise.
The Quote
Here is what Collider reported.
“I did a pilot for it several years ago, to see the viability of it coming back, and everybody went nuts. And they are bringing it back, and they’re hiring somebody else to do Terry McGovern’s role of Launchpad, and they’re hiring somebody else to be Darkwing Duck. I hope they get…everything they deserve. Crazy, I don’t know what to tell you.”
Note the ellipsis in the middle. That appears in the reported quote itself and suggests a pause.
That pause matters. “I hope they get everything they deserve” reads as pointed on paper with no tone attached. Said with a pause and a shrug, it could land as resigned instead of bitter.
Cummings has not specified what exactly he considers misquoted, and Collider has not retracted or corrected its report. So this is his characterization of the coverage, not an established error.
The Recasting Is Real
That part is not disputed.
The original series ran from 1991 to 1992 across 91 episodes. A reboot was announced in 2020, with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee of Point Grey Pictures reportedly producing for Disney+. Few updates since.
Cummings had talked about it repeatedly as though he were returning. At San Diego Comic-Con in 2025, he described an older Darkwing and a grown-up Gosalyn, comparing it to an older Batman coming back after years away.
Earlier this year, he told Screen Rant, “We’re all still alive and kicking. I guess Seth Rogen, my old buddy, he’s going to be one of the prime movers, shakers. So stay tuned.”
Which makes this look like a later decision. Per his Collider comments, he and the original Launchpad McQuack voice actor, Terry McGovern, are both being replaced.
No replacement announced. Disney has not explained the change or detailed the revival’s cast, release date, or platform.
He Still Works With Disney
This gets lost when the story is framed as a break.
Cummings started with Disney in 1985. Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Darkwing Duck, Pete, Bonkers, Monterey Jack, Fat Cat, Ed in The Lion King, Nessus in Hercules, Ray in The Princess and the Frog, and Star Wars pirate Hondo Ohnaka. He also performed portions of Scar’s “Be Prepared,” matching Jeremy Irons closely enough that most people never notice.
He was recast as Pooh for Playdate with Winnie the Pooh. But he kept voicing Pete in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+ through 2026, recently returned as the Cheshire Cat for LEGO Disney Princess: Magical Mayhem, and voiced Darkwing again for Chibiverse in 2025.
Not the profile of someone Disney cut loose. One specific recasting, which is probably why it hurt.
What Nobody Has Established
Disney has offered no explanation for the Darkwing Duck recasting.
Disney also never explains the Legends selection, does not comment on people who are not chosen, and has drawn no public link between the two.
Separately, allegations regarding Cummings from a 2019 custody dispute resurfaced during the Legends discussion. He has denied them as false and baseless. They remain unproven, Disney has never said they affected anything, and connecting them to either decision is speculation.
Where It Lands
Cummings appears to be doing what he described. Still working with Disney, still pushing back on the framing.
Whether the quote was misrepresented is hard to settle from a transcript. Tone does not survive transcription, and a line that reads as a shot can play completely differently in a hallway at a premiere.
What is clear is that he wants the record adjusted, and he made that point standing on a Disney ship doing Disney voices.
Allegations referenced here are unproven and denied by Cummings. Disney has not commented on the recasting or its Legends selection process.
