New ‘Star Wars’ Movie Will Retcon ‘The Rise of Skywalker’: Report
The Star Wars sequel trilogy may have been a financial win for Disney, but its lack of clear direction left the saga — and the fanbase — divided. With each installment pulling the story in a different direction, characters suffered the most — especially Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley), whose arcs never found steady ground across the three films.
But that inconsistency may continue. One of the next films on the horizon is Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine). Scheduled for release on May 28, 2027, it stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray in undisclosed roles. Disney describes the upcoming film as a “standalone” story set five years after The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Starfighter Could Retcon TROS
Now, some rumors suggest that Gosling’s character is a non-Jedi pilot tasked with escorting his Force-sensitive nephew (Gray) across the galaxy. Amy Adams has also been cast in the project, with the same rumor claiming that she’s playing the boy’s Jedi mother.
None of this has been confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm, but if true, this storyline would effectively undo parts of The Rise of Skywalker, which ignored the ending of The Last Jedi (2017) in which a young farmhand on Cantonica is seen demonstrating Force abilities. That moment hinted at new possibilities for the Jedi as whole, but The Rise of Skywalker completely dismissed them (along with many other things), framing Rey as the “last Jedi”.

Rumors of Rey’s Return
As for Rey (Ridley), other reports suggest that that she will make an appearance in Starfighter, with Gosling’s journey potentially leading to her. This would be a clever way to lead into the planned but still undated and untitled Rey-centered project, which is said to be set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and follows her effort to rebuild the Jedi Order.
The idea makes a lot of sense. Rey remains a contentious figure with many fans (not all), but introducing her in a strictly supporting role would allow Disney and Lucasfilm to test the waters before placing the character back at the front and center of the saga.
The Rumored Plot Sounds Too Familiar
Gosling’s mission to deliver his nephew could easily end with Rey, positioning her as the next step in the boy’s training while laying groundwork for her standalone film.
On the other hand, this all sounds far too familiar: A hero tasked with transporting a Force-sensitive child to an experienced Jedi. Star Wars has been here many times before, with the Mandalorian/Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu coming to mind. Speaking of which, their film will be hitting theaters a year before Starfighter — next May, actually.
Whether or not Ridley’s involvement proves true, Star Wars: Starfighter will be one of the next major chapters in the franchise. The film is set to arrive in theaters on May 28, 2027.
The film stars Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
