Few characters are as closely tied to Universal’s history as its legendary Classic Monsters. Decades after Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, and their fellow horror icons first appeared on the big screen, they’re still finding new ways to connect with fans inside Universal Orlando Resort.
Their latest appearance takes an unexpected turn. Instead of emphasizing horror, Universal is giving these famous creatures a playful makeover that celebrates the studio’s past while offering something new for today’s visitors. It’s another sign that the monsters remain just as important to Universal’s identity as ever.
Universal’s Original Stars Still Have a Lasting Legacy
Long before guests could visit lands inspired by Jurassic Park (1993), Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), and Despicable Me (2010), Universal became famous for its groundbreaking monster films.
Characters including Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Mummy became defining figures in horror throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Those movies helped establish Universal Pictures as a leader in the genre and created characters that remain recognizable around the world.
The parks have continued honoring those icons through Halloween Horror Nights, themed merchandise, dining experiences, and seasonal entertainment. Even as Universal expanded with newer franchises, the Classic Monsters never disappeared from the resort.
In fact, they’re enjoying one of their biggest moments in years.

Dark Universe Brings the Monsters Together
Epic Universe gave Universal’s horror legends something they had never received before: a permanent land built entirely around their world.
Dark Universe welcomes guests into the eerie village of Darkmoor, where gothic buildings, strange experiments, and supernatural creatures create an immersive setting unlike anything else at Universal Orlando Resort. Rather than retelling a single classic film, the land tells a new story that connects several famous monsters.
Its signature attraction, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, begins inside Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s laboratory before everything spirals into chaos. During the adventure, guests encounter Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and several other familiar faces.
The atmosphere extends well beyond the attraction. Themed entertainment, detailed architecture, dining locations, and monster encounters help make Darkmoor feel like a living horror village and reinforce Universal’s commitment to its legendary characters.

Universal Studios Florida Takes a Different Approach
While Dark Universe embraces a darker atmosphere, Universal Studios Florida is showing another side of the Classic Monsters.
A new merchandise collection transforms Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, and other familiar characters into colorful cartoon versions with cheerful expressions and playful designs.
Guests can shop for tote bags, mystery merchandise, bag charms, and smaller handbags featuring the new artwork.
Inside Universal recently shared photos of the collection on X, giving fans a first look at the merchandise now available in the park.
The friendlier designs won’t replace the traditional horror versions that many longtime fans love, but they offer a fun alternative that appeals to guests of all ages while keeping Universal’s famous monsters in the spotlight.

Fans Can Still Experience the Monsters in Other Ways
The new merchandise isn’t the only way to celebrate Universal’s horror history.
Although Halloween Horror Nights 2026 won’t include a Classic Monsters haunted house, guests still have another monster-themed experience to anticipate later this year.
The Horror Make-Up Show has entertained visitors for decades by pulling back the curtain on movie special effects. Through comedy, practical effects demonstrations, prosthetics, makeup techniques, and audience participation, the show explains how filmmakers create memorable movie monsters.
Universal temporarily closed the attraction earlier this year while work continues on updates to the theater. Although few details have been announced, the refurbishment is expected to modernize the venue while preserving the show’s familiar style.
With Halloween Horror Nights season approaching, many fans are hoping the refreshed Horror Make-Up Show returns this fall. Universal hasn’t confirmed exactly when that will happen, but it would be a fitting time for the attraction to reopen.

A Classic Franchise Continues to Evolve
Universal has shown that its Classic Monsters are more than nostalgic movie characters. Between the immersive storytelling in Dark Universe and the playful merchandise now available at Universal Studios Florida, the legendary creatures continue to find new ways to connect with guests.
Some fans will always prefer the darker, more traditional versions of Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster, while others may enjoy the lighter cartoon designs. Either way, Universal continues proving there’s still plenty of life left in the monsters that helped build the studio’s legacy.
What do you think about Universal’s softer take on the Classic Monsters? Would you pick up the new merchandise, or do you prefer the classic horror-inspired look?
