Universal Sides With Disney, Immediately Closes Theme Park for Paying Guests

Central Florida is experiencing an unexpected blast of wintry weather, prompting Universal Orlando Resort to shut down Volcano Bay, its iconic water park, until January 24, 2024. The decision comes as cold temperatures and rain grip the region, making outdoor water attractions unsuitable for guests.

Overnight, temperatures across Central Florida plunged into the 30s and 40s, bringing with them freeze warnings for several counties. Wind chills in some areas dropped into the 20s, marking one of the coldest mornings the region has experienced in years. Although the freeze warnings have lifted, the chill isn’t going anywhere just yet.

Monday saw highs stuck in the mid-50s under overcast skies, while the rest of the week promises more rain and cold. By Tuesday, widespread showers will sweep across Florida, and northern parts of the state may even see freezing rain, ice, or snow—a rarity for the Sunshine State.

While Central Florida isn’t expected to experience snow, the combination of rain and low temperatures will keep conditions soggy and unpleasant. By Thursday, the rain should taper off, and sunshine will gradually return over the weekend, along with a slow rise in temperatures.

Volcano Bay Closes Due to Inclement Weather

Known for its lush tropical atmosphere and thrilling water attractions, Universal’s Volcano Bay offers an escape to paradise—complete with a 200-foot Krakatau volcano that dazzles with lava effects at night. However, the park’s immersive island setting relies heavily on warm weather, making the recent cold snap a dealbreaker for operations.

Universal confirmed that Volcano Bay will remain closed until at least January 24, 2024. The closure follows a similar shutdown in early December, when a cold front forced the park to close for six consecutive days.

Disney Water Parks Also Affected

Universal isn’t the only major player impacted by the cold. Walt Disney World’s Blizzard Beach, themed around a snow-capped ski resort in meltdown, has also closed its doors for January 20 and 21. While the park plans to reopen on January 22, continued low temperatures and rainy conditions may push that date back further.

Typhoon Lagoon, Disney’s other water park, is currently closed for seasonal refurbishment, leaving guests with few water park options during this cold spell.

The chilly weather isn’t just affecting water parks—outdoor rides, shows, and nighttime entertainment at both Universal and Disney may also see disruptions if temperatures drop too low. Guests bundling up for evening activities are increasingly opting for indoor attractions to escape the cold.

What to Do During the Closures

While Volcano Bay remains unavailable, Universal guests can explore plenty of other options. Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure remain open, offering indoor and outdoor attractions for guests to enjoy. CityWalk provides dining, shopping, and entertainment options for those looking to stay warm.

Meanwhile, Disney visitors can focus on indoor experiences, such as stage shows, immersive rides, and character dining. Popular attractions like Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain provide a chance to escape the chilly air.

As temperatures begin to rise later in the week, guests can look forward to sunny skies and a return to the warmer weather Central Florida is known for. Until then, packing a jacket and adjusting expectations will help make the most of this rare winter chill.
