Another piece of Universal Studios history may be disappearing for good at one park.
Shrek has been a fixture at Universal theme parks for decades. Following the success of DreamWorks Animation’s 2001 film, the franchise made the jump from movie theaters to theme parks in 2003 with the debut of Shrek 4-D.

The attraction extended the original film’s story, following Shrek and Donkey as they attempt to rescue Princess Fiona from the ghost of Lord Farquaad. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow reprised their respective roles for the experience.
Unlike a traditional movie theater, Shrek 4-D featured moving seats, water sprays, air blasts, and other special effects synchronized with the action onscreen. The roughly 20-minute show became one of Universal’s most recognizable family attractions.
Universal Studios Hollywood welcomed the first version in May 2003, with Universal Studios Florida following in June. Although both American installations have since closed (and we mourn them daily), the attraction continued entertaining guests at Universal’s international theme parks.
But the future of one of those remaining versions is looking increasingly uncertain.

Universal Studios Japan’s Shrek Attraction Has Been Closed for Months
Shrek’s 4-D Adventure may have quietly played its final performance at Universal Studios Japan.
According to the park’s official attraction closure calendar, the show has been closed indefinitely since January 8, 2026. It remains listed as unavailable throughout October and November, with no reopening date confirmed for December or beyond.
That means the attraction has now been unavailable for more than nine consecutive months.
The Japanese version opened on June 20, 2003, just weeks after its American counterparts. Located in the Hollywood area, it has operated at Universal Studios Japan for more than 23 years.

Universal’s official attraction page still advertises the experience, which has a capacity of 324 guests and no minimum height requirement.
However, this is not the first time Shrek’s 4-D Adventure has disappeared from the park’s operating schedule.
The attraction previously closed in January 2025 before returning in November. Its comeback proved short-lived, with Universal shutting down the show again less than two months later.
Part of the issue is that Shrek’s 4-D Adventure shares its theater with Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic. Both attractions have frequently been sidelined as Universal Studios Japan uses the space for temporary entertainment offerings.
In 2026, the theater hosted Jujutsu Kaisen: The Real 4-D as part of Universal Cool Japan. The anime-inspired experience debuted on January 30, featuring an original story and immersive effects.
Although the limited-time attraction concluded its scheduled run on August 18, Shrek’s 4-D Adventure has yet to return.

Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic is also listed as indefinitely closed, with the same January 8 start date. Neither attraction currently has a confirmed reopening date.
Universal Studios Japan has not formally announced the permanent retirement of either show. Both remain listed on its website, meaning a future return is still possible.
However, with Shrek’s 4-D Adventure having operated for only a brief period since the beginning of 2025, its long-term future is far from guaranteed.
Universal Continues To Replace Its Original Shrek Experiences
If Universal Studios Japan permanently retires Shrek’s 4-D Adventure, Universal Studios Singapore would be the only remaining Universal theme park offering the original experience.
The attraction’s decline began in California, where Universal Studios Hollywood closed Shrek 4-D in August 2017 after 14 years. Its former theater was transformed into DreamWorks Theatre Featuring Kung Fu Panda, which opened the following year.
Universal Studios Florida followed on January 10, 2022, ending its version’s nearly 19-year run.
According to Universal Orlando Resort, the attraction welcomed approximately 75 million guests before closing to make way for Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast, which debuted in 2023.
That did not mean the end of Shrek at Universal Orlando.

In June 2024, Universal Studios Florida opened DreamWorks Land, a family-friendly area featuring characters from Shrek, Trolls, and Kung Fu Panda.
Visitors can meet Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey outside the ogre’s cottage at Shrek’s Swamp Meet. The area also includes Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres and King Harold’s Swamp Symphony.
More recently, Universal expanded the franchise’s theme park presence in Texas.
Universal Kids Resort officially opened in Frisco on July 1, 2026, introducing an entire land dedicated to DreamWorks’ Shrek’s Swamp.
Its attractions include Shrek & Fiona’s Happily Ogre After, a family ride centered on the couple’s love story, and Shrek’s Swamp Splash and Smash, an interactive water play area.
Meanwhile, Universal Studios Singapore continues to advertise Shrek 4-D Adventure in its Far Far Away land.
The park also features Enchanted Airways, Puss in Boots’ Giant Journey, and Donkey LIVE, making it one of Universal’s biggest remaining destinations for Shrek fans.
The uncertain future of the Japanese attraction comes as DreamWorks prepares to release another installment in the film franchise.
Shrek 5 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 30, 2027, after previously being slated for July and December 2026.
Myers, Murphy, and Diaz are returning, while Zendaya joins the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo will voice her brothers, Fergus and Farkle.
The sequel will arrive 17 years after Shrek Forever After (2010), potentially introducing the franchise to a new generation of moviegoers.
