Guests walking through Islands of Adventure have watched one of the park’s original lands become increasingly difficult to recognize.
Construction walls have spread across The Lost Continent, familiar locations have disappeared, and Poseidon’s Fury is now coming down after sitting closed for years. With so much focused on what Universal is removing, there hasn’t been much reason to talk about anything returning.
That makes the latest development a welcome change.
Universal has removed construction barriers from one familiar spot that had become inaccessible during the work. It’s certainly not enough to bring The Lost Continent back to life, but for guests spending a full day at Islands of Adventure, this reopening could make navigating this side of the park a little easier.
Universal Continues Taking Apart an Opening-Day Land
The Lost Continent has been part of Islands of Adventure since the theme park opened in 1999.
Originally, the land featured several areas centered on mythology, legends, and ancient civilizations. Its footprint eventually became much smaller when Universal transformed a large section into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade.
More changes followed.
Poseidon’s Fury permanently closed in May 2023, taking away one of the land’s biggest remaining experiences. The walkthrough attraction took guests inside the Temple of Poseidon and featured large sets, projections, water effects, and a battle between Poseidon and Lord Darkenon.
Although the attraction closed years ago, its enormous exterior remained.
Universal has now moved forward with demolition around the former Poseidon’s Fury location. Other pieces of The Lost Continent have disappeared as well, making the area look increasingly different from what longtime Islands of Adventure guests remember.
With construction taking over more of the land, guests also lost access to a particularly useful location.
Now, Universal has given it back.
What Did Universal Just Reopen?
Some construction barriers have been removed, and the bathrooms in The Lost Continent are now accessible.
It isn’t the kind of reopening that will convince anyone to plan a Universal Orlando Resort vacation, but it matters once guests are actually inside the park.
The Lost Continent sits between Seuss Landing and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. That puts these bathrooms along a pathway used by guests traveling between two popular sections of Islands of Adventure.
Having them available again can be especially helpful for families with young children and guests who simply don’t want to continue walking into another area to find an alternative.
The reopening also stands out because of everything happening around it.
Universal continues dismantling The Lost Continent, so seeing construction barriers disappear and an existing location reopen offers a rare reversal. It doesn’t mean Universal is bringing the old land back, but guests at least have another useful option available while demolition continues.
Eventually, this entire area will look very different.
What Could Universal Build Here Next?
Universal has confirmed that The Lost Continent will eventually make way for a new themed land. What the company hasn’t revealed is the theme, attractions, or other major details.
That leaves plenty of room for speculation.
Pokémon has entered the conversation as Universal continues working with Nintendo. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD already operates at Epic Universe, and Pokémon would give Universal another major gaming property to develop, potentially.
The Legend of Zelda has also appeared frequently in speculation. A fantasy property filled with temples and mythology could make for an interesting successor to The Lost Continent.
The Lord of the Rings has also generated rumors. Talk of Universal potentially creating a Middle-earth land has circulated for years, with the franchise offering possibilities for attractions, restaurants, shops, and immersive environments.
None of those properties has been confirmed as The Lost Continent’s replacement.
For now, Universal continues clearing portions of the existing land without revealing exactly what will occupy the former Poseidon’s Fury area.
Guests Finally Get Something Back
Most recent news from The Lost Continent has involved another closure, demolition project, or the disappearance of a piece of the land.
This time, guests are getting something back.
The reopened bathrooms won’t stop The Lost Continent’s transformation, and they certainly don’t signal a return to what the area once was. Poseidon’s Fury is still coming down, and Universal has already confirmed a new themed land is eventually coming.
But for guests walking between Hogsmeade and Seuss Landing today, the reopening provides something immediately useful.
As Universal continues removing pieces of The Lost Continent, even a small reopening can make a noticeable difference.
