Universal Orlando Confirms Multi-Attraction Extinction as Classics Are Wiped Out

Universal Orlando has said goodbye to plenty of attractions over the years, but some departures still sting for longtime fans.

From massive movie-themed adventures to smaller family experiences, the resort has removed rides and shows that once helped define its identity. Some replacements became major successes, while others struggled to live up to what came before.

Now, Universal is preparing to retire another attraction that has entertained guests for more than three decades.

And it’s not the only piece of the resort’s history disappearing.

Universal’s Original Attractions Didn’t All Survive

When Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990, its attractions brought popular movies to life through elaborate sets, practical effects, and memorable encounters.

Kongfrontation became one of the park’s earliest favorites. Guests traveled through New York City aboard an aerial tram as an enormous King Kong attacked the surrounding area.

The attraction lasted until September 2002, when Universal permanently closed it. Revenge of the Mummy eventually took its place in 2004.

Another opening-day favorite, Jaws, survived considerably longer.

The boat ride took guests through Amity Island, where a mechanical shark repeatedly threatened passengers. Technical problems forced Universal to overhaul the attraction before reopening it in 1993.

Despite its popularity, Jaws permanently closed on January 2, 2012.

Universal demolished the attraction and introduced The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley in 2014.

The replacement became enormously popular, but that didn’t stop longtime visitors from missing their encounters with the shark.

More Movie Favorites Eventually Disappeared

Universal continued retiring recognizable attractions as the resort evolved.

Back to the Future: The Ride opened in 1991, taking guests on a time-traveling adventure featuring Doc Brown and Biff Tannen.

For more than 15 years, the simulator remained a major part of Universal Studios Florida.

That ended in March 2007.

The Simpsons Ride opened in its place in May 2008, replacing the Institute of Future Technology with a journey through Krustyland.

Twister…Ride It Out suffered a similar fate.

Opening in 1998, the attraction recreated the dangerous tornadoes from Twister (1996) through powerful winds, flying debris, and practical effects.

Universal permanently closed it in November 2015 before introducing Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2017.

Then came Shrek 4-D.

The family attraction opened in 2003 and featured Shrek and Donkey in an animated adventure with moving seats and special effects.

Universal closed it in January 2022 after nearly 19 years. Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast replaced it in August 2023.

One Location Has Already Lost Two Major Attractions

Perhaps one of Universal’s more unusual replacement stories involves Disaster! A Major Motion Picture Ride…Starring You!

The attraction developed from Earthquake: The Big One, which debuted alongside Universal Studios Florida in 1990.

Guests experienced a simulated earthquake aboard a subway train as structures collapsed, flames erupted, and water rushed toward them.

Disaster! later introduced interactive filmmaking elements and appearances by Christopher Walken.

Universal closed the experience in September 2015 to make room for Fast & Furious – Supercharged, which opened in 2018.

However, that replacement didn’t last.

Universal permanently closed Fast & Furious – Supercharged in August 2026, ending another attraction at the same location approximately 11 years after Disaster!’s departure.

Another Original Universal Land Is Disappearing

The changes aren’t limited to Universal Studios Florida.

At Islands of Adventure, The Lost Continent continues to lose attractions and landmarks dating back to the park’s early years.

The themed area opened in 1999, but Universal has gradually dismantled portions of its original identity.

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad closed in 2018, followed by Poseidon’s Fury in 2023.

Demolition work has continued across the site, and Mythos Restaurant is scheduled to close permanently in 2027.

Universal hasn’t revealed its complete replacement plans, leaving fans wondering what will eventually occupy the area.

Meanwhile, another closure is approaching at Universal Studios Florida.

A 36-Year Universal Tradition Is Almost Over

Animal Actors on Location! will present its final performance on November 2, 2026, before becoming permanently unavailable beginning November 3.

The show traces its history to Universal Studios Florida’s opening in 1990.

Originally called Animal Actors Stage, it became Animal Planet Live in 2001 before adopting its current name in 2006.

For decades, trained dogs, birds, and other animals have entertained families while demonstrating techniques used in movie and television productions.

Unlike Universal’s larger thrill rides, Animal Actors offers a slower-paced experience connected to the park’s original filmmaking identity.

Universal has confirmed that another experience will replace the show, although the company hasn’t revealed what guests should expect.

For longtime visitors, the closure represents another permanent goodbye.

Universal will undoubtedly continue to introduce new attractions, but each replacement removes another piece of the resort’s past.

And with Animal Actors approaching its final performance, guests have just days remaining to experience one more Universal tradition before it disappears.
