Universal Cancels November Return for ‘Jurassic Park’
Quick update for anyone circling a date on the Orlando calendar. Jurassic Park River Adventure at Universal’s Islands of Adventure was set to reopen on November 20. Now Universal’s website lists December 17, 2026.

Here’s the full rundown, and we’re keeping it tight to what’s been reported. Where details are secondhand, we’ll say so. Where there are gaps, we’ll say that too.
Dates for attractions are easy to mix up, especially once an older announcement has been shared around. That’s why this piece spends extra time on the exact numbers and wording. If you’re planning around this ride, the details below are the ones worth having straight.
The Old Date Versus the New Date

Universal first announced November 20, a date described as just in time for the start of the holiday guest rush. The new date is December 17. That’s 27 days later, and eight days before Christmas.
The ride’s page on the Universal Orlando website was recently updated. It now reads:
Jurassic Park River Adventure is temporarily closed due to scheduled maintenance and will now reopen on December 17, 2026.
No reason was provided for the extended refurbishment. We’re not going to fill in the blank.
Reading Universal’s Wording Closely
Wording matters, so let’s look at exactly what the page says. It calls the ride “temporarily closed due to scheduled maintenance.” It then says the ride “will now reopen on December 17, 2026.”
Two things stand out. First, the page describes the closure as maintenance and doesn’t go into detail about what that includes. Second, the word “now” signals that the date is different from what was listed before, which matches the November 20 date that was announced earlier. The page itself doesn’t explain the change, and neither does any other information we have.
How We Got Here

The ride closed on January 5, 2026, for a refurbishment described as nearly year-long. Water rides closing in winter is normal. In this case, the reporting calls it extended downtime.
River Adventure opened in 1999, and it reportedly had several broken effects and aging infrastructure that warranted the longer closure. That “reportedly” is important. Those details aren’t attributed to an official Universal statement in what we have.
What the Photos Show
Aerial photos have revealed some of the extensive work underway, including a track replacement and new roofing. That’s the extent of what’s been shown, so that’s all we’ll describe. Aerial photos only capture part of a project, so they can’t tell us how much work is left or how the schedule is going.
The Open Questions
Here’s what the reporting doesn’t tell us:
- Why the date moved
- Whether the work is behind schedule
- Whether anything was added to the project
- Whether the date could change again
The one confirmed change is the date itself, from November 20 to December 17, 2026, as listed on Universal’s website.
Meanwhile, Elsewhere on the Island
Jurassic Park River Adventure is part of the Jurassic Park area of Islands of Adventure. The area also includes Jurassic World VelociCoaster, Pteranodon Flyers, the Camp Jurassic playground, Jurassic Park Discovery Center, and Raptor Encounter.
Trivia: Three Parks, Three Versions
This is the second version of the ride. It opened three years after the original 1996 ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. According to the report, the Hollywood version was revamped in 2018 and became Jurassic World: The Ride. A third version opened at Universal Studios Japan in 2001.
Getting Your Dates Straight
If your Orlando trip lands before December 17, the ride is listed as closed. If you’re visiting on or after December 17, it’s listed as scheduled to reopen, though the date has already changed once, from November 20.
That doesn’t mean it will change again, and nothing we have says it will. It simply means a listed date is a schedule, and schedules are worth rechecking. But a quick look at Universal’s page before you go is a smart habit.
If your trip includes both Universal and Walt Disney World, treat the ride as a bonus and plan an itinerary that works either way. If you’re visiting before December 17, the other attractions in the Jurassic Park area listed above are there to fill the time.
Don’t Use the Old Date
One easy mistake is relying on the first announcement. The November 20 date has been replaced on Universal’s page, so if you see it elsewhere, it’s out of date. The current listed date is December 17, 2026.
