Tomorrowland Update at Disneyland Following Months Long Closure

If you’ve walked past Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at Disneyland Park over the last month or so, you probably noticed part of the building hidden behind walls.

Per WDW News Today, the gray scrim and blue construction barriers covering a section of the ride’s exterior have been taken down. Underneath is a warmer, more vibrant tan finish spread across the textured walls, and it makes a noticeable difference as you approach.

The coverings went up in mid-September, but the ride never closed. Cast members reportedly shared that crews were handling exterior painting and renovations. This is the second time this year guests have seen visible work here. Buzz closed in April 2026 for about two months and reopened in mid-June.

That spring refurbishment gave the facade a serious repaint. Several architectural details moved away from the older gray, green, and beige color scheme in favor of brighter white and blue-green tones. The entrance columns got new colors, and the trim and exterior mural were freshened up, too. Inside, improved lighting makes some effects pop more, especially around the Emperor Zurg animatronic.

A Quick Refresher on Buzz

New to this one? Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is an interactive dark ride inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story films, tucked into Tomorrowland near Space Mountain and Star Tours – The Adventures Continue. You’ll hop into a space cruiser equipped with laser cannons and a score display, then join Buzz on his mission to defeat Zurg, shooting-gallery style. Grab the joystick, and you can spin your vehicle 360 degrees.

The ride soft-opened in March 2005 before its official opening on May 5 that year. There’s no height requirement, so the whole family can ride together.

More Changes Around the Neighborhood

Buzz isn’t the only spot getting attention. In September, coverings came down at Little Green Men Store Command, the Toy Story shop you’ll exit through, revealing refreshed parts of the facade and the restored Space Mountain mural. More updated paintwork appeared in the area in October.

These touch-ups follow Disney’s announcement of a new Tomorrowland for Disneyland Resort at the D23 Expo this summer, and Disney Parks Blog laid out the thinking behind the project afterward.

“The transformation of Tomorrowland will honor the legacy of the original land while reimagining its future,” Disney Parks Blog wrote. “Disneyland Resort will strive to preserve what guests cherish most, while also introducing new experiences and possibilities for the next generation of fans.”

What This Means for Your Visit

Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is running as usual, and nothing about the ride itself has changed. Just expect a brighter exterior when you arrive, and keep an eye out for more construction walls going up and coming down as Tomorrowland continues to evolve.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his… More »
