Confirmed: Tom Holland Prepares To Leave Marvel Behind Following ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Tom Holland is already thinking about his exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The actor has spent a decade playing Peter Parker, beginning with his surprise arrival in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Since then, Spider-Man has become one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most recognizable heroes.
That run is not over yet. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) earned $72 million from previews, setting a new record, while also receiving a strong response from critics and fans.

The latest movie leaves Peter with an uncertain future, but it does not bring Holland’s Marvel story to an immediate end. Instead, it appears to set up another chapter before the actor eventually steps away.
A Decade of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man
Holland joined the MCU when Tony Stark recruited Peter for the airport battle in Captain America: Civil War. The appearance introduced a younger Spider-Man who was still learning how to balance school, family, and his secret life as a hero.
Spider-Man: Homecoming followed one year later. Peter faced Adrian Toomes, also known as the Vulture, while trying to prove that he could protect New York without relying on Stark’s advanced technology.
His role quickly expanded beyond the solo movies. Holland appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, where Peter was erased by Thanos, and Avengers: Endgame, which restored him five years later.
Peter then watched Stark die during the Avengers’ final battle. The moment ended one of the MCU’s most important relationships and forced Spider-Man to continue without the mentor who had first brought him into the larger Marvel world.
Spider-Man: Far From Home placed Peter at the center of another crisis before ending with his identity exposed. That cliffhanger led directly into Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.
The movie ended with Doctor Strange making everyone forget Peter Parker. MJ, played by Zendaya, and Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, no longer remembered their closest friend.
Brand New Day begins with Peter living alone and operating as Spider-Man full-time. He keeps his distance from MJ and Ned as they build lives that no longer include him.
His isolation also begins to affect him in dangerous ways. Although the movie appeared to place Peter on a path toward death, he survives a near-fatal encounter with help from Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink.
Peter leaves the experience with a clearer understanding that he does not have to face everything alone. The ending keeps him firmly inside the MCU and confirms that Spider-Man will return.
Holland Has Planned His Marvel Departure
Despite that confirmation, Holland is already considering how his time as Peter Parker should end.
During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor revealed that he has developed an idea for eventually handing the Spider-Man role to someone else.
“I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton and I think it’s really exciting,” Holland said.
Holland explained that the plan has been developing since Spider-Man: No Way Home. Although he acknowledged that the details could change, he appears to know what he wants from Peter’s final MCU story.
The phrase “passing on of the baton” immediately raised questions about Miles Morales. The character is another version of Spider-Man in Marvel Comics and has become widely known through Sony’s animated Spider-Verse movies.
Marvel Studios has not confirmed that Miles will replace Peter Parker. It also remains unclear whether Holland’s version of Spider-Man would retire, leave New York, become a mentor, or die while protecting another hero.
His departure does not appear to be close. Holland is not expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), but he is thought to be involved in Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
The post-credits scene in Brand New Day may offer another clue. Ned’s Spidey Tracker shows Peter moving beyond Earth and the moon, prompting speculation that Spider-Man will travel to Battleworld during the upcoming Avengers crossover.
Brand New Day is also believed to be the first installment in another Spider-Man trilogy. That would potentially give Holland two more solo movies before he leaves the role, alongside any additional MCU appearances.
Producer Amy Pascal has previously made it clear that the studio wants Holland to remain. “We hope Tom’s going to be our Spider-Man forever.”
Holland’s latest comments suggest that he has a different ending in mind. After 10 years inside the MCU, he is preparing for a future in which Peter Parker’s story concludes and another Spider-Man takes his place.
