Say Goodbye to Marvel: Disney Officially Replaces Superheroes With ‘The Simpsons’
The Simpsons is officially taking over a release slot previously held for an untitled Marvel Studios film. On September 29, 2025, Deadline reported that the animated family from Springfield will return to the big screen in 2027, marking two decades since their first feature film.
The Simpsons Movie, which debuted in 2007, was a massive success, grossing $183 million domestically and over $536 million worldwide. After a long period of silence following the original film, 20th Century Studios announced plans to release a sequel in 2018. However, after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, those plans went dormant. Now, The Simpsons will finally return to theaters on July 23, 2027, exactly 20 years after the first film’s release.

Disney has not revealed details about the plot or title of the upcoming movie. Still, a small clue in the marketing, the “2” sprinkles on Homer Simpson’s donut, hints at the possibility of the film being called The Simpsons Movie 2. While details about the story remain a mystery, it is expected that the original voice cast, including Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Yeardley Smith (Lisa), Julie Kavner (Marge), and Nancy Cartwright (Bart), will return to voice their iconic characters. It is still unclear whether David Silverman, the director of The Simpsons Movie (2007) and several classic episodes, will be involved in the 2027 movie.
Deadline reported that the new Simpsons movie will replace an untitled Marvel Studios film that was initially scheduled for release in 2027. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) need not worry, though—Avengers: Secret Wars is still on track to premiere on December 17, 2027.
Marvel Studios has become accustomed to reshuffling its release dates in recent years. Avengers: Doomsday was pushed back from May 2026 to December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars also saw its release date shift from May 2027 to December 2027. The next MCU release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is scheduled for July 31, 2026.
