The Rise and Fall of Disney’s Ambitious ‘Star Wars’ Ride
Once hailed as one of the most immersive and technologically advanced attractions ever built by Walt Disney Imagineering, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is now best known for its reliability issues and frequent breakdowns.
The attraction opened in December 2019 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and was designed to be the crown jewel of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. With cutting-edge trackless ride vehicles, animatronics, projection mapping, and practical effects, it promised guests the chance to live out a cinematic Star Wars experience unlike anything the parks had offered before.
But just five years after its debut, Disney Park guests are as likely to be evacuated as they are to complete the mission. Last week, one visitor to the Florida park shared a video after their ride came to an unexpected halt mid-experience. “Got stopped for 20+ minutes,” Redditor u/Nathan4All posted. “We were evacuated ‘back stage’ and told we couldn’t take additional photos. Honestly a pretty cool experience.”

The video shows a stalled scene featuring Kylo Ren and General Hux—animatronics that, in this case, were frozen in place due to the shutdown.
Friday’s incident is just one of many. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has earned a reputation for being finicky, with its complex systems often causing it to go down. Some fans blame the attraction’s sensitive safety triggers, which can reportedly stop the ride if a guest drops an item. Others point to lingering technical issues, such as the large cannon effects that stopped functioning shortly after the ride opened.
Interestingly, Disneyland Resort’s version of the attraction recently received repairs to its broken cannon scene, restoring some of the lost motion. At Walt Disney World Resort, however, the cannons remain inactive.
Disney did not issue a public statement regarding the latest breakdown, which is standard practice for short-term outages. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance eventually reopened and was running normally at the time of publication.
