‘The Punisher’ Series Actor Recast Ahead of ‘One Last Kill’ TV Special
Marvel Studios is continuing to fold its once-separate television properties into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its latest move comes with a notable update tied to one of its darkest heroes.
The Punisher: One Last Kill is set to debut May 12 on Disney+, marking another step in Marvel’s effort to bring its Netflix-era characters into official MCU continuity. The special presentation is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard), who also co-wrote the project alongside Jon Bernthal. Bernthal returns as Frank Castle, reprising the role he first played in Daredevil in 2016 before headlining his own series.
Positioned after the events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, the story continues Frank’s journey within the MCU timeline, maintaining the gritty tone that defined his earlier appearances.
As always, the narrative remains anchored in the devastating loss of Frank’s family. His wife and children, including his daughter Lisa, have consistently served as the emotional core of his story. Their deaths are more than a tragic origin—they shape every decision Frank makes.
The newly released trailer for One Last Kill reveals a significant casting update. Lisa Castle, originally played by Nicolette Pierini in Netflix’s The Punisher, has been recast.
Given the nearly ten-year gap since the original series, the change appears rooted in practicality. Keeping the same performer would have introduced continuity challenges, particularly when portraying a young child in flashbacks or psychological sequences. Rather than employing de-aging effects or archival footage, Marvel has opted for a clean transition with a new actress, whose identity has not yet been announced.
Lisa’s presence in One Last Kill is expected to extend beyond traditional flashbacks. Previous portrayals often used her as part of Frank’s fractured psyche, blurring the line between memory and hallucination.
These moments underscore his guilt and reinforce the emotional cost of his violent mission. In this new installment, Lisa is likely to continue serving as a symbolic figure—representing both Frank’s lost past and the life he can never reclaim.
This approach aligns with Marvel’s recent emphasis on character-driven storytelling, particularly within its Disney+ slate.
The special will also see the return of Curtis Hoyle, played by Jason R. Moore, whose grounded perspective often counters Frank’s extreme methods. Other cast members include Roe Rancell as Dennis and Mila Jaymes as Charli.
On the opposing side, Ma Gnucci enters the story as a formidable antagonist. A crime boss pulled from Marvel Comics, her inclusion suggests a conflict that will test Frank both physically and mentally.
Frank Castle’s journey on screen has undergone a steady transformation. Introduced in Daredevil as a supporting character, he quickly became a standout figure, leading to his own two-season series on Netflix. That version leaned heavily into psychological drama and grounded violence, distinguishing itself from other Marvel projects.
Now, within the MCU proper, One Last Kill represents a continuation of that tone while placing Frank in a more interconnected universe. The transition highlights Marvel’s willingness to preserve what worked while adapting it for a broader narrative framework.
The upcoming special appears poised to deliver a more introspective chapter in Frank’s story. While action remains central, the emphasis on Lisa Castle suggests a deeper emotional focus.
The project arrives during a year defined by street-level storytelling. Alongside Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), Marvel is shifting attention away from Multiverse-heavy narratives in favor of grounded conflicts.
Bernthal is also set to appear in the Spider-Man film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, though it remains unclear whether the events of One Last Kill will connect directly. Beyond that, Marvel is building toward Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), projects expected to reshape the franchise and potentially usher in a new era centered on the X-Men.
