“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” Elton shared with the audience, his voice filled with emotion. “So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”

The acclaimed singer-songwriter, who composed the score for the musical adaptation of the popular 2006 film, expressed gratitude to his husband, David Furnish, calling him his “rock” during this challenging time.

Elton’s vision troubles began earlier this year, when he developed a severe eye infection that left him with limited vision in one eye. In September, he took to social media to share an update, explaining that while the healing process was underway, progress was slow.

“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he wrote at the time.

However, the condition has persisted. During a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Elton revealed the full extent of the challenges he’s facing.

“It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. And my left eye’s not the greatest,” he admitted. Despite this, Elton remains optimistic, noting that there is still “hope and encouragement” that his sight might improve with treatment.

Yet the limitations have taken a toll on his ability to create. “I can’t go into the studio and record because I can’t see a lyric for a start,” he explained. “It kind of floored me. I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”
