A reality star on ABC’s The Bachelorette is dead after his vehicle plunged over a cliff hundreds of feet high.
A former star of the ABC reality show The Bachelorette was killed when his vehicle plunged over the side of a 230-foot (70 m) cliff in an eastern suburb of Sydney, Australia, just two months after he welcomed his new baby girl.
According to reports, local residents discovered a vehicle engulfed in flames at the bottom of a cliff in the Raleigh Reserve area of the eastern Sydney suburb of Dover Heights and immediately called authorities. Police officers and emergency services personnel arrived at the scene of the crash at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night, September 9, and discovered the vehicle and the only person in the vehicle–the driver–identified as Charlie Newling, a reality TV contestant on the hit ABC show, The Bachelorette Australia.
First responders’ heroic efforts to save Newling were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased on the scene. He was 36.
New South Wales Police initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident, though as of the time of this publication, there is no evidence to suggest foul play was involved in the tragedy, and no evidence has been released suggesting drunk driving played a role. Newling’s cause of the TV star’s tragic death remains undisclosed at this time, pending the medical examiner’s final assessment and report.
“The Bachelorette” Star
As soon as he appeared on Season 4 of ABC’s The Bachelorette Australia in 2018, newcomer Charlie Newling became a fan-favorite reality star on the uber-popular television reality series. He was not awarded the final rose, however, after he chose not to introduce then-Bachelorette Ali Oetjen to his family during his visit to his hometown, as the couple were not dating exclusively, a decision that created tension between the two and controversy on the show.
His time on the reality TV show followed his relationship with Oetjen, and he instantly became famous among viewers of the show. He earned the nickname “Mr. Perfect” because of his strong stance on family values.
Newling had also been romantically linked to The Bachelor star Dasha Gaivoronski (Season 6) in late 2018, as well as influencer Esme DeWitt in 2019.
Charlie Newling, a builder by trade, and his partner Kristal Taylor, whom he began dating in January 2021, just celebrated the birth of their first child together–a daughter–eight weeks prior to the tragic accident. Newling also had a 13-year-old son from a previous relationship.
