Disney’s First Wreck-It Ralph Ride Opens in Tokyo in 2027—Here’s What’s Coming

New Expansion Removes Former Tomorrowland Classic

Disney has confirmed that Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue will open April 15, 2027, at Tokyo Disneyland, giving Japan the first theme park attraction based on Wreck-It Ralph. The interactive ride brings Ralph and Vanellope to Tomorrowland, while a shop, popcorn flavor, and pre-opening activities expand the experience beyond its doors.

For U.S. fans hoping to step into the candy-coated game, the destination matters: This attraction is coming to Tokyo Disney Resort, not a Disney park in Florida or California. Disney has also revealed how the ride works and what guests can experience before opening day.

What Happens on Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue?

Inside the Sugar Rush game, King Candy has transformed sweets into destructive Sugar Bugs. Riders join Ralph and Vanellope to restore the bugs to their original candy forms, according to Disney Parks Blog’s announcement.

NEW: Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue officially opens April 15, 2027 at Tokyo Disneyland. The world’s first Wreck-It Ralph attraction will send guests into Sugar Rush to stop King Candy, using onboard scanners to turn “Sugar Bugs” back into candy while earning points along the way. Scanners installed in the vehicles give guests a role in the rescue. Scores depend on the number and types of Sugar Bugs restored, with results displayed on vehicle screens and available for a limited time afterward in the Tokyo Disney Resort App.

Ride photos will be added to the app for purchase. Families can compare scores, although Disney has not said that a particular result is necessary to complete the story.

The official attraction page lists a roughly four-minute experience, three guests per vehicle, a required Standby Pass, and paid Disney Premier Access. Guests can obtain a Standby Pass through the resort app after entering the park; availability and access arrangements should be checked closer to a visit.

A Familiar Ride Makes Way for Ralph

The new story takes over the space previously occupied by Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters, which closed in October 2024. Inside the Magic previously covered the Buzz Lightyear attraction’s final days, when Tokyo was preparing to exchange one interactive adventure for another.

That history is important: Sugar Rush is a new attraction in an existing ride space, not a confirmed ground-up build. Its candy-game setting and rescue mission give the location a different identity, but the replacement also means Tokyo guests cannot return to their former Buzz attraction.

The project sits within a wider Tomorrowland transformation. The resort has also outlined a rebuilt Space Mountain and a redesigned plaza, with Space Mountain Earthrise slated for 2027; its precise opening date has not been announced.

New Merchandise and Sugar-Lime Popcorn

Pixel Prism, the shop next to the ride, is scheduled to open April 15 alongside Sugar Rush. Disney describes a digital-marketplace setting with pixel-patterned flooring and an illuminated structure at the entrance, plus merchandise including plush, candy, and scanner-inspired toys.

Guests can taste part of the rollout earlier. Popping Station is scheduled to open March 17, 2027, with Sugar-Lime Popcorn, a sweet-and-tart flavor inspired by the Sugar Bugs; Disney says it will also be sold at popcorn wagons throughout Tokyo Disneyland.

The park plans additional attraction-inspired menu items at restaurants. The new shop and stand were already part of Tokyo’s previously announced Tomorrowland plans; the opening dates and popcorn flavor give guests more specific reasons to watch the calendar.

How To Join the Pre-Opening Events

The countdown begins January 12, 2027, when a smartphone mini-game lets players practice saving Sugar Rush. Disney says it can be played from home, while a special version in select areas of Tokyo Disneyland will incorporate the park’s scenery.

Attraction-themed decorations and photo opportunities follow in Tomorrowland on February 18. Beginning March 18, projections inspired by the ride will appear at Cinderella Castle, giving visitors another way to see the story before the attraction opens.

Those dates matter for anyone arriving before April 15: The activities are part of the buildup, not an announcement that the ride itself will be operating early. Disney has not announced a public preview schedule in its announcement.

What the Tokyo Exclusive Means for U.S. Fans

For Americans who have waited to explore Sugar Rush in a Disney park, the first opportunity requires an overseas trip. The difference can be frustrating for fans who want the same characters closer to home, though an individual preference does not establish a wider pattern of neglected investment.

Tokyo’s business structure also matters. Oriental Land Company operates Tokyo Disney Resort under a Disney license, so its decisions should not be treated as a simple transfer of a U.S. park budget to Japan.

Disney is also developing Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with parts of the land planned for 2027 while work continues on its coaster. Inside the Magic has covered the Florida land’s attractions and dining plans, providing a separate example of domestic development.

For now, families planning a Tokyo trip can use the January-to-April schedule as a starting point and check the resort app for access rules. Disney has not announced a U.S. version of Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue; future domestic plans remain unknown.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
