Bastille Day, also known as French National Day, is a public holiday in France celebrated on July 14th each year. It marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, during the French Revolution. This event is considered a turning point in the revolution and is a symbol of the fight against tyranny and the struggle for democracy and freedom in France. Bastille Day celebrations usually include parades, fireworks, French cuisine, and parties throughout the country.

In honor of Bastille Day, which parallels America’s Independence Day, Disneyland Paris put on a nighttime fireworks show over Sleeping Beauty Castle like none other. The park used 1,495 drones to create Europe’s largest drone show EVER! The drones formed symbols of French culture, such as the French flag (in the shape of Mickey Mouse), the Eiffel Tower, and the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Of course, this drone show also featured some Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disney/ Pixar French favorites such as Beauty and the Beast (1991), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), The Aristocats (1970), and Ratatouille (2007). The images illuminated in the sky above Disneyland Paris were so clear, crisp, and vibrant that crowds and virtual onlookers couldn’t contain their awe.

American Disney fans immediately questioned why the drones weren’t being implemented in the US parks, while France locals were happy to enjoy the spectacle while it was still exclusively a Disneyland Paris experience.

About Lana Porter

Lana has never lost a Disney Trivia night. Maybe it’s the hundreds of times she’s been to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, her love for Disney’s ’90’s era hand-animated musicals, or the fact that she’s often likened to cartoon characters, but Disney and its magic have a special place in her heart. Her favorite Disney experiences include the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival, eating Mickey Bars on the PeopleMover, and crying during the Magic Kingdom fireworks show. One day she hopes to be chosen as the rebel spy on Star Tours. When Lana isn’t Park Hopping, she’s at home reading books of all topics, watching her favs on Disney+, or snuggling her two cats, which she swears are not named after Disney characters. She loves surprising people with her knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but admits she is still catching up with Star Wars. She is happy to combine her excitement for writing with her love for Disney-style storytelling and share what she can with the world!
