‘Stranger Things’ Controversy Isn’t Over as New Series Breaks Canon

The final season of Stranger Things may have closed the Hawkins saga in live-action, but the response from fans was far from unanimous. After Season 5 wrapped, many viewers expressed frustration with certain storytelling elements, prompting online petitions and a slew of theories that went viral — including the infamous “Conformity Gate”.

Despite the backlash, Netflix is leaning even further into the Stranger Things universe. One of the most talked-about upcoming projects is the animated prequel Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. Set during the winter of 1985, the series fills the gap between seasons 2 and 3 and reunites the core Hawkins crew — Eleven, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Will, Max, and Hopper.

But what has many fans reacting strongly is the introduction of Nikki Baxter, a new character created specifically for the animated series. Described as a “tinker” — someone adept with gadgets and improvised tech — Nikki joins the familiar gang in their encounter with paranormal anomalies that the live-action series never depicted.

She has short pinkish hair and a look that instantly distinguishes her from the original group.

Criticism centers on continuity. Because Tales From ’85 takes place before events that are already canonically established in seasons 3 through 5, Nikki’s absence in the main show raises questions about how this new chapter fits logically into the franchise timeline.

Some fans worry that adding a character who clearly interacts with the core group but is never referenced again feels like a retcon — even if the series is still considered canon.

As intense reactions to Season 5 continue, Tales From ’85 and the presence of Nikki Baxter stand to further divide fans — between those open to an expanded animated canon and those who feel it may muddy the established timeline.

The series is slated to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
