‘Star Wars’ Reveals Brand-New Horror Project

For a franchise built around the struggle between light and dark, Star Wars has periodically flirted with horror across its canon, often in unexpected corners of the faraway galaxy.

From eerie episodes in animated shows to spooky comics and haunting novels, moments of genuine fright have long punctuated the saga’s broader sci-fi fantasy mythos.

Star Wars Is No Stranger to Horror

In Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008), several episodes centered on mystic threats and undead forces. In Season 4’s “Massacre”, on the mist-shrouded planet Dathomir, the Nightsisters wielded ancient magick and even raised the dead, giving audiences a taste of supernatural horror within the larger war narrative.

Star Wars Rebels (2014) ventured even further into unsettling territory in Season 1’s “Rise of the Old Masters”, where the mummified corpse of Jedi Master Luminara Unduli was used as a trap. Watch the scene below from YouTube channel “Everything Star Wars“:

But Star Wars has mostly indulged the darker side of the galaxy in print.

Joe Schreiber’s Death Troopers and its prequel Red Harvest stand out as notable examples of horror in Star Wars literature; the former depicts a derelict Imperial prison barge overrun by a contagion that reduces its inhabitants to zombie-like attackers.

The late ’90s Galaxy of Fear series, aimed at young adults, infused its saga with frightening encounters and bizarre phenomena in the wake of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). Comic anthologies such as Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader’s Castle have also leaned into spooky storytelling with stories released around Halloween that mix familiar faces and eerie scenarios.

A New Spooky Star Wars Tale Is Coming

Now, the franchise’s next horror arrives in a new form. Per TheDirect, Lucasfilm has slated an untitled horror-themed novel by Kiersten White for September 1, 2026.

White previously contributed to the Star Wars canon with the 2022 novel Padawan, making her a familiar voice within the franchise’s publishing arm. Her new book, described as a “chilling horror-themed middle grade novel based on the Star Wars galaxy,” follows a young girl haunted by an evil presence as she seeks to unravel a terrifying mystery.

The horror-leaning project marks a notable expansion for Star Wars publishing, one that embraces suspense and supernatural tone more directly than most prior entries outside the main films and TV series.

Despite the book’s middle-grade designation, with roots in genre storytelling that stretches back decades—from animated fear episodes to zombie-filled novels and gothic comics—the saga’s latest turn toward horror signals an evolving appetite for genre blends within a galaxy far, far away.
