‘Star Wars’ Reportedly Reverses Decision About Upcoming Standalone Movie

The Star Wars universe is preparing for a theatrical return, and the next chapter may be bigger than expected. After years of streaming dominance, Lucasfilm is steering its galaxy back to theaters with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu arriving in 2026, followed by Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter in 2027.

StarWars.com confirmed: “Set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Gosling will play a brand-new character teased by the actor’s appearance on stage.” The project will star Ryan Gosling and begin production this fall. Alongside Gosling, Mia Goth and Matt Smith will appear as villains, joined by Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Flynn Gray is set to co-lead, suggesting a Jedi-Padawan story at the film’s core.

Despite being promoted as an “all-new standalone adventure,” speculation is building that Starfighter could now launch a trilogy. A report from @MyTimeToShineH (via SFFGazette) claimed the movie may feature a cameo from a familiar character–Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker–and potentially tying into future installments. This could then make Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s New Jedi Order movie the second in the trio.

Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey-centered New Jedi Order film has been delayed, and now these rumors suggest Starfighter could serve as a bridge. Reports point to Amy Adams’ Jedi character and her Force-sensitive son possibly connecting with Rey’s story down the line.

Daniel Richtman previously described the narrative as: “A Jedi (played by Ryan Gosling) trains his 15-year-old nephew as his Padawan. They’re on a mission while being pursued by two villains–one male, one female. The Padawan’s mother also plays an important role in the story, and there’s another major female character as well.”

Shawn Levy called the project “a dream come true,” adding: “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true.”

If Starfighter is indeed the first of three films, it could mark the foundation of Star Wars’ post-Skywalker future, shifting attention toward new characters while keeping room for legacy cameos.
