The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Hotel Is Gone for Good

Construction photos confirm Walt Disney World Resort is moving ahead with the permanent transformation of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel into office space, crushing any remaining hopes that the $6,000-per-night experience might return.

$250 Million Failure

The immersive two-night Star Wars hotel opened on March 1, 2022, charging $4,000- $6,000 per stay. The price covered meals, a dinner show, character interactions aboard the fictional ship Halcyon, and Galaxy’s Edge access.

Early demand was strong, with initial voyages selling out quickly. But interest evaporated by late 2022, forcing Disney to discount rooms for DVC members and Annual Passholders. By March 2023, empty reservation calendars prompted Walt Disney World Resort to announce the permanent closure of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, effective September 30, 2023.

The venture lasted 18 months and lost an estimated $250 million.

No Viable Alternative Uses

Heartbroken Halcyon fans suggested converting the space into a standard resort or dinner theater. The building’s design prevents both options. It houses only 100 windowless rooms without pools or typical Disney Resort amenities. The backstage area behind Disney’s Hollywood Studios lacks outdoor areas and is located in zones that Walt Disney World Resort intentionally keeps hidden from guests.

Disney Imagineering Offices Replace Star Wars Hotel

In January 2025, Walt Disney World Resort revealed that the former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser structure would become Walt Disney Imagineering office space. Teams developing a Monsters, Inc. (2001) land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Pueblo Esperanza at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, and Disney Villains and Cars (2006) areas at Magic Kingdom Park will work from the converted building.

No completion date has been announced for the transformation. Although most traces of the Galactic Starcruiser have disappeared, some backstage road signs around Walt Disney World Resort still direct families toward the defunct Star Wars hotel.

The office conversion ends all speculation about reviving the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser or repurposing the facility for Walt Disney World Resort guests. The most expensive Disney hotel experiment in history is officially being turned into cubicles and conference rooms.
