‘Spider-Man & Wolverine’ Reportedly in Development Following Franchise Reboot News
For nearly 25 years, Spider-Man has remained one of the defining figures of modern superhero cinema. Across multiple reboots, shifting studio alliances, and increasingly interconnected storylines, the wall-crawler has continuously adapted to new eras of blockbuster filmmaking. Now the character appears poised for yet another transformation as Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures prepare for the next phase of the franchise.
The relationship between the two studios has long shaped Spider-Man’s cinematic path. What initially began as a landmark collaboration allowing the character to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown into a more intricate partnership that affects both Spider-Man’s standalone films and the larger narrative world around him.
At the center of the current era is Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. The actor first appeared as the teenage superhero in Captain America: Civil War (2016) before leading his own trilogy beginning with Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Since then, Holland has become the MCU’s primary version of the character, appearing in several crossover films alongside the Avengers.
That story now moves forward as Marvel Studios continues building toward the next major chapter of the MCU. Phase Six began with The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) and will culminate in the franchise’s next crossover spectacles, Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). Within the studio, the period is widely viewed as a chance to refine the storytelling formula that started with Iron Man in 2008 and eventually led to the massive success of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Spider-Man’s next solo film will arrive in the middle of that era. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) takes place four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), the film that dramatically altered Peter Parker’s life. In the final moments of that story, Peter makes the difficult decision to have Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) erase him from the memories of everyone who knows him.
According to details revealed through retail listings connected to an upcoming art book, the new film will center on a far more isolated version of the character. Rather than relying on major crossover elements or the broader network of Marvel heroes, the story focuses on Peter navigating life largely on his own.
That approach represents a noticeable tonal change for the series. In most Spider-Man stories, Peter struggles to juggle relationships, school or work, and his responsibilities as a hero protecting New York City. Following the events of No Way Home, that familiar balance no longer exists.
Peter continues operating as Spider-Man, swinging between the skyscrapers of Manhattan, but the personal life that once grounded him has been wiped away. Friends, mentors, and loved ones no longer remember him, leaving the hero to carry on without the connections that once defined his world.
Tom Holland has acknowledged that the upcoming film serves as a reset for the character. During a 2025 interview, he offered a brief preview of the direction.
“I know we left you with a massive clip hanger at the end of No Way Home, so Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a fresh start. It is exactly that. That’s all I can say,” the actor said (via Variety).
Beyond the MCU storyline, Sony has also been reevaluating its attempt to build a connected universe based on Spider-Man characters. Known as the Spider-Man Universe (SSU), the series has produced several spin-offs featuring figures from the hero’s wider mythology.
Those projects have included films in the Venom franchise as well as other movies like Morbius (2022) and Madame Web (2024). While the Venom installments performed well at the box office, the broader slate struggled to establish a consistent identity, and several entries received mixed or negative responses.
As a result, Sony leadership has indicated that the studio plans to reboot its Spider-Man-adjacent universe in order to rethink how those characters are used going forward. Whether that future iteration could eventually intersect with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man remains unclear.
Meanwhile, new speculation suggests Sony may be exploring an unexpected crossover. Entertainment scooper MyTimeToShineHello recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Marvel Studios and Sony could be considering a Spider-Man & Wolverine film.

The report surfaced shortly after rumors that the opening scene of Avengers: Doomsday could include Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker facing off against Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, along with other X-Men characters. According to those reports, the sequence–and the film overall–would deliver something unlike anything Marvel Studios has attempted before.
Regardless of how those plans unfold, Spider-Man remains a cornerstone property for both Sony and Marvel. With a new solo movie on the horizon and potential crossover projects being discussed, the character once again finds himself at the center of a major shift for superhero storytelling.
While Holland’s cinematic version prepares to return to theaters, Marvel Comics is also exploring a darker storyline for the hero. The upcoming five-issue limited series “Spider-Man: Long Way Home” brings together writer Jonathan Hickman and artist/co-writer Adam Kubert, pairing Spider-Man with Hulk and Punisher as they pursue a powerful artifact in a tense race.
