Sony Pictures To Speak on ‘Spider-Man’ Movie Resets
The future of Spider-Man on film is entering a period of major change, as Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios prepare to reshape multiple corners of the long-running franchise.

Few characters in comic book history have maintained the level of recognition that Spider-Man continues to enjoy. From comic panels to blockbuster films and animated features, the web-slinger has remained a central figure across generations. But while audiences have grown familiar with the current cinematic landscape—particularly Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Miles Morales in Sony’s animated films—that status quo is about to shift in significant ways.
Sony Pictures is set to take the stage at CinemaCon 2026, running April 13 through April 16 at The Dolby Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The studio is expected to highlight its upcoming slate, including a closer look at Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) ahead of its July debut, as well as updates on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027), the next chapter in its animated saga.
At the same time, Sony has acknowledged that its attempt at building a shared universe around Spider-Man-adjacent characters has faltered, confirming that a reset is now underway. Together, these developments suggest a franchise at a crossroads—one that could redefine Spider-Man’s cinematic direction.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) is being framed as more than a continuation—it represents a recalibration for both Peter Parker and the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After years of dominance at the box office, Marvel Studios has faced a more mixed reception in recent phases. While Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) demonstrated the brand’s continued drawing power, other entries have struggled to reach the same heights. Even Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), widely praised and commercially successful, didn’t fully quiet concerns about fatigue among audiences when it released years ago.
New titles like The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (2026) are being positioned as part of a larger reset. Notably, Spider-Man is not expected to play a central role in the next Avengers film, marking a departure from previous ensemble storytelling.
Instead, Peter Parker’s story is taking a more isolated path.

Set four years after the events of No Way Home, Brand New Day explores a world where Peter Parker no longer exists in the memories of those around him. Spider-Man remains active, but without the relationships that once grounded him. It’s a sharp tonal pivot, moving away from the interconnected storytelling that defined his earlier appearances.
Tom Holland has described the project as a “fresh start,” and early footage supports that claim. The character appears more volatile, with powers that are changing in unpredictable ways—most notably, the emergence of organic webbing.
The film draws inspiration from Marvel Comics’ “The Other” storyline, weaving in themes of transformation, mortality, and renewal. Despite these heightened elements, the narrative remains rooted in Peter’s personal struggles. Characters like MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) continue their lives, unaware of his existence, while new adversaries such as Scorpion and Tombstone enter the picture.

The Spider-Verse
Sony is also preparing to close a defining chapter in its animated Spider-Man storytelling.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027) will conclude the trilogy centered on Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), bringing a story that began with 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse to its intended endpoint. That first film introduced audiences to Miles with a distinct visual approach and an emotional coming-of-age narrative that resonated widely. Its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse (2023), expanded both the scale and ambition of the story.
According to producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the third installment has been designed as a clear conclusion rather than an open-ended continuation. In an era where franchises often extend indefinitely, the decision to define a definitive ending stands out. However, this does not signal the end of the Spider-Verse concept itself.

Sony appears to be shifting toward a broader approach, focusing on spin-offs and standalone projects rather than a single continuous storyline. Characters introduced throughout the trilogy, including Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), are positioned to lead future narratives.
While Miles Morales’ central arc will conclude, the Multiverse framework leaves room for his return in other forms. For audiences, the final installment represents both a conclusion and a transition point—closing one story while opening new possibilities.
When Beyond the Spider-Verse arrives, it will mark the end of a trilogy that helped reshape animated superhero films, while setting the foundation for what follows.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
Beyond its core Spider-Man stories, Sony is making sweeping changes to its wider cinematic universe.
Sony chairman Tom Rothman has confirmed that the studio is planning a “fresh reboot” of its Spider-Man Universe, with “new people” leading the charge. The announcement follows a series of inconsistent releases. While the Venom films found commercial success, later entries like Morbius (2022) and Madame Web (2024) struggled to gain traction.
Details about the reboot remain limited, but the language suggests a significant overhaul. A new creative direction, tone, and potentially even a new version of Spider-Man could be on the table.

Tom Holland’s iteration is expected to remain within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving Sony’s separate franchise to redefine itself independently. This raises ongoing questions about whether Spider-Man will eventually be incorporated into that universe or if the focus will remain on supporting characters.
Either way, the studio’s next moves carry considerable weight. With its current approach losing momentum, this reset could determine whether Sony’s standalone universe finds stability or continues to struggle.
