As ‘Snow White’ Crashes Out, New Info Comes To Light About Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’
Disney is setting its sights on its next live-action remake, Lilo & Stitch (2025), now that Snow White (2025) has made its debut.
Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the adaptation of the beloved 2002 animated hit arrives in theaters on May 23, 2025. The film, originally planned for Disney+, was re-routed for a theatrical release in August 2024, following the studio’s decision to give Moana 2 (2024) a similar boost. Since then, Disney has gone all-in on its promotional efforts, tying Lilo & Stitch to Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) campaigns and releasing eye-catching posters featuring Stitch integrated into classic Disney animated artwork, such as Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Aladdin (1992).
The cast features Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai and Chris Sanders returning to voice Stitch. The ensemble also includes Sydney Elizabeth Agudong as Nani Pelekai, Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena, Zach Galifianakis as Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Billy Magnussen as Agent Pleakley, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, and Hannah Waddingham as the Grand Councilwoman.
Meanwhile, Film Ratings has officially confirmed that Lilo & Stitch has been rated PG, citing “action, peril, and thematic elements.” This mirrors the original 2002 film’s PG rating, which was given for “mild sci-fi action.”
The rating reveal arrives amid the rollout of Disney’s Snow White, a project that has been mired in challenges since its inception. Directed by Marc Webb and penned by Erin Cressida Wilson, the film faced scrutiny over its casting and significant story alterations, including changes to the seven dwarfs and the prince’s role. The controversy appears to have translated to box office struggles—Snow White opened with just $43 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to $87 million. Given its estimated budget of nearly $300 million, the film’s financial outlook is uncertain.
With Snow White facing an uphill battle, Lilo & Stitch has an opportunity to make a stronger impact. Will it succeed where Snow White faltered?
