Negative New Information Comes To Light Over Ryan Reynolds’ MCU Future and ‘Deadpool 4’
The co-creator of Deadpool, Rob Liefeld, has shed new light on the status of Ryan Reynolds in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A decade ago, the idea of Deadpool joining the MCU would have seemed laughable. Today, it is a reality. Since Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox, Marvel Studios finally has the rights to bring the ‘Merc with a Mouth’ into the franchise.
Last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) introduced both Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to the MCU. The film follows Deadpool as he teams up with a reluctant Wolverine (his idol) from an alternate timeline to stop a threat that could destroy the Multiverse.
If you needed any more proof that Disney is committed to Deadpool’s future, it also introduced the character to both Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris last year to promote the film’s release.
Reynolds has teased his future as the character, noting in December, “There are no updates to share just yet, but I trust Kevin [Feige] and Lou D’Esposito with my life. The character trait I love most about Deadpool is that he’s a fanboy. His enthusiasm and longing to be part of a team is really endearing to me. It’s his overarching wish-fulfillment story.”
For now, however, it’s not clear when Reynolds will be back on the big screen.
Rob Liefield Shuts Down Ryan Reynolds’ MCU Whispers
Earlier this week, it was reported that this return could be right around the corner, with reports claiming that Reynolds is in the process of writing an ensemble film for the franchise.
In reality, however, all Reynolds said in his interview was “I’m writing something right now… It’s a little ensemble, but I like that he’s isolated.”
Fans had a field day with Reynolds’ statement, taking that as proof that he was in the process of penning a film in which Deadpool teams up with other members of the MCU – especially since moments earlier he was talking about why Deadpool works better as a solo act rather than as a cog in The Avengers or X-Men.
Sadly, Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefield has stepped in to clarify that Reynolds wasn’t talking about penning a new Deadpool project, but rather comparing the superhero’s tale to a project on which he’s currently working.
“Gentle reminder that he is writing a movie called ‘Boy Band,'” Liefield wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
While we’d love to believe otherwise, it does seem like Liefield is right and Reynolds was talking about that project in particular. Realistically, the next time we’ll see Deadpool will likely be in an Avengers movie, with no standalone Deadpool project confirmed as of right now.

‘Deadpool’ Drama Between Liefield and Marvel
Interestingly enough, Liefield has been somewhat at odds with the Deadpool brand in recent months. Despite co-creating the character, he previously criticized both Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige, after not being invited to the Deadpool & Wolverine afterparty following the world premiere in 2024.
Theoretically, however, Liefield would still be aware if more projects were in the works – which, as of right now, it seems like they’re not.
Reynolds has also notably been embroiled in drama recently, having been named in an ongoing legal battle between his wife, Blake Lively, and her former co-star and director, Justin Baldoni. In his filing, the latter claimed that Reynolds openly mocked him by using him as inspiration for the character of Nicepool in Deadpool & Wolverine.
