Restricted Access Coming to Disney’s Expensive Resort

Change is a constant at Walt Disney World, and the latest round of updates is bringing some noticeable transformations to a fan-favorite resort hotel: Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

Currently undergoing extensive refurbishment, this iconic property—just steps from Magic Kingdom—has become a focal point of Disney’s resort-wide enhancements. The work is part of a long-term project that’s touched everything from rooms to restaurants. “The lobby’s renovation marks the culmination of the resort’s multi-year refurbishment, which has included enhanced guest rooms, refreshed dining experiences, including the Michelin star-awarded Victoria & Albert’s, Cítricos, Narcoossee’s and 1900 Park Fare, and more. ” Disney shared last month.

At the heart of this phase is a redesign of the Grand Floridian’s opulent main lobby, which will see the addition of a brand-new Lobby Bar. Disney Parks Blog gave fans a sneak peek: “Inspired by the lobby’s iconic birdcage, the bar will pay tribute to the resort’s Victorian roots with intricate woodwork, stained glass, and brass accents. You may even spot colorful birds in the stained glass and murals throughout the atrium! Opposite the bar, guests will still find the Victorian cage-style elevator that fans know and love. ”

Guests can also look forward to a refreshed aesthetic throughout the lobby. According to Disney Parks Blog, “As shown in the new rendering, the lobby will feature beautiful new carpeting with Victorian-inspired borders and scrollwork featuring hand-drawn florals inspired by turn-of-the-century botanical studies. Updated furnishings will blend rich finishes and brass accents with cozy, welcoming fabrics–plus a few playful touches inspired by Florida’s natural beauty and Victorian decorating trends. ”

Of course, the work comes with some temporary changes. Disney has posted its usual “Pardon Our Pixie Dust” advisory, stating: “Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is currently undergoing refurbishment. Guests will be able to see and hear construction during daytime hours. Most Resort hotel amenities will remain available. Please allow for extra travel time.”

One major impact of this construction? The Grand Floridian Gingerbread House—a beloved holiday tradition—won’t be returning this year. The lobby refurbishment is expected to continue through November 2025.

Guests with upcoming stays should also be aware of additional limitations. As reported by Kenny the Pirate: “Disney is notifying guests with upcoming reservations that access to the Grand Floridian Resort’s Main Building will be restricted for select dates. Disney shares, ‘On select nights in May, the Resort’s Main Building will be unavailable to all guests between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.’”

These overnight hours are typically low-traffic, but Disney is advising guests in advance. Previously, only certain parts of the lobby were expected to be closed intermittently.

Located in the Magic Kingdom Resort area, the Grand Floridian is considered one of Disney’s most upscale accommodations—with pricing to match. With nightly rates that can climb into the thousands, it remains a top choice for guests seeking luxury, convenience, and proximity to the park.

As work continues, guests can expect more updates in the coming months—and a refreshed, reimagined lobby space that preserves the charm of the Grand Floridian’s Victorian elegance.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his… More »
