Luxury Disney World Resort Begins Focus Toward Adult Guests
Change is coming to one of Walt Disney World Resort’s most iconic hotels, and it may signal a shift in the resort’s target audience. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, long considered the crown jewel of the company’s Deluxe Resort offerings, is currently undergoing major lobby renovations, and part of that process includes the removal of a beloved, 36-year-old architectural feature.
Earlier this month, Disney shared a first look at the revamped Grand Floridian lobby, complete with new furnishings, custom carpeting, and an all-new lobby bar. The bar, the first of its kind at the Deluxe Resort hotel, draws inspiration from the ornate golden birdcage that has stood in the lobby since its opening. Featuring brass accents, stained glass, and woodwork rich in detail, the upcoming space aims to blend elegance with a fresh, adult-focused experience.
A New Era for the Grand Floridian
The original birdcage was more than just a decorative piece. Over the years, it became a symbol of the resort’s Victorian charm, once housing a tree and live birds. Stained glass panels and murals showcasing bird imagery are planned as subtle nods to the original design, but not every Disney Parks fan is thrilled with the changes.
While Disney has promised to maintain the atrium’s iconic look, including its Victorian-style elevator and grand piano, some longtime guests are concerned about the direction of the renovation. Critics argue that the shift toward more adult-friendly amenities, like the bar, could undermine the family-friendly spirit of the luxury Disney Resort hotel.
The controversy only grew when construction walls appeared in the lobby surrounding the birdcage, and photos and videos of crews preparing to dismantle it began circulating online.

On Wednesday, WDWNT posted video footage showing that the roof and part of the cage’s base had already been removed. It will soon disappear entirely.

Making Way for the Future
Walt Disney World Resort has announced that the renovation will continue through November 2025. Due to the construction, the resort’s annual Gingerbread House display will not be offered this holiday season. However, guests can still enjoy other amenities like the Monorail Station and pool areas, which remain unaffected.
