New Version of Ezra Bridger Confirmed for ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ Series
Ahsoka Tano’s journey through the galaxy is far from over, and in her next chapter, she’s not going it alone. With a returning ensemble and new layers of Star Wars mythology, Season 2 of Ahsoka is shaping up to expand the franchise in significant ways.
When Ahsoka premiered on Disney+ on August 22, 2023, it became much more than a continuation of the former Jedi Padawan’s path. Created by Dave Filoni, who also serves as executive producer alongside Jon Favreau and Kathleen Kennedy, the series emerged as a connective thread uniting various corners of the franchise. Set in 9 ABY, the timeline positions it in the post-Return of the Jedi era—directly alongside The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew.
Rosario Dawson leads the series as Ahsoka Tano, navigating a galaxy still recovering from the fall of the Empire. Her story centers on locating Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) and investigating the mysterious reappearance of Grand Admiral Thrawn, once again portrayed by Lars Mikkelsen.
The supporting cast includes Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Mandalorian artist and warrior Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as General Hera Syndulla, Ivanna Sakhno as the Force-sensitive Shin Hati, and the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, a powerful mercenary. Diana Lee Inosanto also reprises her role as Morgan Elsbeth. The Season 1 finale left viewers on a dramatic note—Ahsoka and Sabine were stranded on Peridea while Ezra made his way back to Hera and the central galaxy.
For months, fans speculated whether the narrative would continue through another season or transition into Dave Filoni’s announced theatrical film, which was revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2023 alongside other titles from James Mangold and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Since then, another project, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, has been added to the 2027 slate.
But now it’s official—Season 2 of Ahsoka is confirmed. The announcement was made in tandem with news that Favreau is developing a theatrical release centered on The Mandalorian and Grogu, slated for May 2026.
Behind the camera, Filoni is reportedly approaching Season 2 as a potential endpoint. “According to [Daniel Richtman], the plan now is to make sure the series has a satisfying ending in case it’s canceled and doesn’t return for a third season.” The report adds, “We hadn’t expected Filoni to tell this story beyond a couple of seasons, anyway, but Disney+ could always push for more episodes if Ahsoka is a big enough hit.”
Off-screen events also cast a long shadow over the production. Ray Stevenson’s unexpected passing just days before his 59th birthday shocked fans and creators alike. Known for his work in Rome and the Thor series, Stevenson reportedly experienced heart-related hospitalizations while filming Cassino in Ischia (2024). The show honored him with a tribute.
Dominic Purcell completed Stevenson’s role in Cassino in Ischia, and Lucasfilm has since confirmed that Baylan Skoll’s story will continue, with a new face in the role.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Scottish actor Rory McCann, known for playing The Hound in Game of Thrones, will take over as Baylan Skoll in Season 2. An official image of McCann in character debuted at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo.
This recast aligns with Star Wars‘ broader strategy in adapting animated characters to live-action. Ahsoka, Hera, Ezra, and Sabine were all recast from their Rebels voice actors—Ashley Eckstein, Vanessa Marshall, Taylor Gray, and Tiya Sircar—to Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eman Esfandi, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo, respectively.
Fans recently got their first glimpse of Ezra Bridger’s updated look. In a photo posted on Threads, Eman Esfandi revealed a more polished appearance for the character, captioning it, “Before shooting.” According to The Direct, a sharper, action-oriented image of Ezra has also surfaced, confirming the new aesthetic for Season 2.
Introduced in Star Wars Rebels, Ezra Bridger has grown from a streetwise orphan to a key player in the Star Wars narrative. His arc—from wielding a slingshot on Lothal to making selfless sacrifices for the galaxy—embodies the core themes of hope and redemption.
Initially reluctant to fight, Ezra’s connection to the Force eventually led him to train under Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.). Through encounters with pivotal figures like Darth Maul and Ahsoka, he matured into a leading figure of the early Rebellion.
His pivotal moment arrived in the Rebels finale, when he used the purrgil—giant hyperspace-traveling creatures—to trap himself and Thrawn, removing the Imperial threat from Lothal.
Star Wars: Ahsoka later revealed Ezra had survived, living in exile in a faraway galaxy as Thrawn plotted his return. Sabine’s desperate mission to find him succeeded, though their reunion was short-lived—Ezra returned alone to aid the galaxy once more.
Now poised to rejoin the fight during a period of looming instability, Ezra Bridger’s next chapter could have massive ramifications for the New Republic’s fragile future.
Whether or not Ahsoka continues past Season 2, the next installment is set to deepen the stakes for Ezra, Ahsoka, and the entire galaxy far, far away.
