New James Bond Will Be Less “Cold” Than Past Portrayals, Studio Confirms
007 fans are about to get two very different visions of James Bond.
The upcoming film reboot, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two) with a script from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), has yet to reveal its leading man. But if recent Bond entries are any indication — from Skyfall to No Time to Die — the cinematic series may continue trending toward stylish restraint, with action that’s polished but rarely shocking.
On the other hand, IO Interactive’s “007 First Light” is positioning itself as the opposite: violent, physical, and brutal. Watch the official trailer for the game below:
In a new featurette for the game, which sheds light on the newly imagined 007 and the world he inhabits, Narrative & Cinematic Director Martin Emborg explains that IO Interactive “wanted a physical Bond” with the fighting to be “visceral and brutal and violent and super-fun and exciting”.
This isn’t a side note — it’s the centerpiece of their design. Combat has been built to let players smash opponents into the scenery, string together flowing melee attacks, and revel in the chaos.
The twist? The Bond at the heart of “First Light” is younger than we’ve ever seen. Patrick Gibson plays an MI6 recruit at the beginning of his career, impatient and unrefined, but still recognizably 007. Emborg also clarifies that he’s “not yet cold, he’s not callous,” adding that he’s “more energetic” with the “impatience of youth built into him.”

That blend of youthful recklessness with brutal, over-the-top violence could create a sharper edge than even the films dare show. Ironically, the young Bond, though much less hardened than past iterations, might give fans a bloodier, more ferocious spy.
With “007 First Light” targeting a 2026 release on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, Bond fans will soon find themselves looking to the controller — not the cinema — for their most explosive 007 fix.
