New ‘Harry Potter’ Star Pulled From Instagram Before HBO Premiere
HBO’s new Harry has gone offline. Dominic McLaughlin, the young star leading the network’s upcoming Harry Potter series, no longer has an active Instagram account, and all signs point to his parents making the call. With the show’s big Christmas premiere on the horizon, it’s a move that has fans talking.

Here’s the rundown on the deactivation, plus everything else happening around the series right now, including the very first review.
It’s the kind of low key news that says a lot about how carefully a major studio and a young actor’s family are handling a huge, high pressure launch.
The Post Everyone’s Sharing

The news came from the fan account Dominic Updates on X. “Dominic’s parents have decided to deactivate his only social media account (official_dominicmclaughlin on Instagram),” the post said. “Sad to see him go from the grid but glad the parents are actively managing his exposure/privacy etc. on social media!”
The handle, official_dominicmclaughlin, is now inactive. It was his only public social media page, so the deactivation means fans have lost their one direct line to the young actor. Neither HBO nor the family has commented, so the reason isn’t confirmed. Still, the general read among fans is that this is a protective move, and honestly, it makes sense for a kid about to become very famous very quickly.

Why This Show Draws So Much Heat

This isn’t just another series premiere. HBO is rebooting the wizarding world from scratch, 15 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011) ended the movies. Season 1 is officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and follows Harry’s first year at Hogwarts. Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout play Hermione and Ron. The grown up cast includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
The show has been divisive from day one. Some fans don’t see the point in a remake of a series that finished in 2011. Casting Essiedu as Snape triggered intense backlash and even racist abuse. And J.K. Rowling’s connection to the project has drawn criticism over her views on transgender issues. With all that swirling, a family keeping its young star off social media seems like a smart play.
The Boss Likes What He Sees
The first review is in, and it comes from the guy in charge. HBO chief Casey Bloys told Bloomberg he’s seen all of Season 1. “It is great, and I’m very, very happy,” he said. “So, I feel really, really good about that.”
Now, obviously, a boss praising his own show isn’t exactly a critic’s rave. Bloys is also about to run streaming for both Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery once the two companies merge on October 6, according to Deadline. So yes, take it with a grain of salt.
What the Trailers Show So Far

The footage does give fans some hope. The series looks ready to dig deeper into the books. Trailers show Harry being chased by Dudley’s gang at school, Petunia cutting his hair, and Harry and Hagrid riding the London Underground, all moments the movies skipped or shrank.
Hogwarts looks familiar without copying the films. There’s a redesigned Entrance Hall, Professor Sprout’s greenhouse, the Sorting Ceremony, and Harry’s first Quidditch match. The small details stand out too, like Dumbledore’s half moon glasses, dirt on Ron’s nose, and brand new Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans. The story is set firmly in the 1990s with period clothes and styling, and quieter scenes, such as Hagrid talking about James and Lily, get room to breathe.
Season 2 Is Already Rolling
HBO is moving fast. Season 2 will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and cameras rolled in the village of Latimer, Buckinghamshire, in September. Season 1 writer Jon Brown is now co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner to juggle overlapping productions.
A Quiet Move That Speaks Volumes
It’s a small thing, but it says plenty. Putting privacy first for a young actor is a healthy choice when the spotlight is about to get a lot brighter. Fans will still see lots of Harry on screen this Christmas. They just won’t get daily updates from his personal feed. That kind of breathing room could go a long way toward helping a young actor enjoy the ride instead of being buried by it.
Excited for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and what do you think of the Instagram news? Tell us in the comments, and please keep it kind, since a lot of the cast and their families are probably reading along.
