New ‘Harry Potter’ HBO Series Confirms Six Key Cast Members

Fans of the Harry Potter series are eagerly anticipating HBO’s upcoming TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s magical universe, and the latest casting announcements will only fuel that excitement. With filming slated to begin this summer, the series is already shaping up to be a highly anticipated event for both long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Now, Variety has confirmed several key cast members.

John Lithgow (Shrek, Dexter, The Crown), an actor with a long and diverse career, was previously confirmed to play the role of Albus Dumbledore, the wise Hogwarts headmaster. Now, it seems Lithgow’s casting has paved the way for many more actors.

The latest announcement includes Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds, The White Queen) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Gangs of London) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon (Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt, Rupert Goold’s Patriots) as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Harry & Paul) as Argus Filch.

As the show gears up to begin filming, anticipation is building over who will be cast in the remaining iconic roles. Fans are already speculating about who will play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, who were played by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson respectively, in the eight Harry Potter films.

But for now, the confirmed cast members will leave fans with plenty to mull over until the next major announcement.

With such a talented lineup, the Harry Potter TV series is poised to deliver a fresh take on the beloved series, blending the familiar magic with new energy.

The Harry Potter television series is written and executive-produced by showrunner Francesca Gardiner (HBO’s Succession, His Dark Materials, Killing Eve). The series is also executive-produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) will executive produce and direct multiple episodes.

“The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling,” the description on the official Harry Potter site reads.

It adds: “The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years. Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”
