New ‘Batman’ (1989) Sequel Confirms Return of Iconic Characters From Tim Burton Films
John Jackson Miller’s upcoming novel, “Batman: Revolution”, is set to reignite the Burtonverse as it reunites fans with many familiar faces from Tim Burton’s iconic films.
Scheduled for release on October 28, 2025, this new installment takes place in the narrow window between Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), bridging the gap with a fresh narrative that honors the quasi-gothic, tragi‐comic aesthetic central to the Burton films.
“Batman: Revolution” builds on the foundation laid by Miller’s previous work, “Batman: Resurrection”, which was released last October and followed Bruce Wayne as he dealt with the aftermath of The Joker’s death, as seen in the 1989 film.
The official synopsis for the new novel confirms that Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight will once again don the cowl, alongside other returning characters who helped define the Burtonverse in both films.
So, we’ll also see the return of characters such as Gotham City industrialist Max Shreck—played by Christopher Walken in Batman Returns—and the steadfast Alfred Pennyworth, as originally portrayed by Michael Gough in the two Tim Burton films and the two Joel Schumacher-directed sequels, Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997).
Commissioner James Gordon, played by Pat Hingle in those four films, also makes an appearance, reinforcing the continuity that longtime Burtonverse fans will appreciate.

In a recent statement, Miller explained that “Revolution” was conceived with an eye for authenticity, drawing on elements that made the original films resonate with audiences while introducing subtle new twists. “Both ‘Resurrection’ and ‘Revolution’ take place between Batman and Batman Returns, and I tried to write them both as if they came out then, too — drawing on characters who appeared in both films,” he noted.
“You’ll see old favorites — and some new ones, which I again approached with an eye to Tim Burton’s tragi-comic aesthetic.”
In addition to the returning characters, the novel will introduce characters such as the Burtonverse version of The Riddler, Norman Pinkus.
With returning icons anchoring the story and new characters poised to add fresh twists, Miller’s novel promises to be an essential addition to the Burtonverse canon.
“Batman: Revolution” will be released on October 28, 2025.
