“RIP,” Fans Respond After Disney Seemingly Kills Minnie Mouse
It’s a sad day for Mickey Mouse, Daisy and Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and friends, as The Walt Disney Company just killed Minnie Mouse. The 95-year-old Disney character has delighted fans since first appearing in Steamboat Willie (1928).
Minnie Mouse is arguably as famous as her beloved beau, Mickey Mouse, alongside whom she’s starred in countless animations. The pair have found their way into millions of homes in the last century with merchandise for Disney fans aged zero to one hundred.
Unsurprisingly, there’s no shortage of Mickey and Minnie Mouse merchandise at Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, and the international Disney parks. Thousands of guests sport Mickey and Minnie ears daily. Even more wear the iconic characters on shirts, Loungefly backpacks, and other apparel.
Last month, The Walt Disney Company debuted its annual Halloween merchandise collection–including one item that appalled Disney fans. Redditor u/MonocularVision shared a photo of the controversial Disneyland Resort tee shirt that showed Minnie Mouse as a ghost:
RIP Minnie
The shirt reads “My Boo” and is likely part of a matching set for couples. However, some Disney Parks fans felt the design implied that Minnie Mouse was dead since the character was clearly drawn as a ghost–not wearing a ghost costume.
“Oh god, I really didn’t think of the implications until just now,” read the most popular comment from u/OneAngryDuck.
“Minnie f**king beefed it,” u/LowRexx replied.
Others had a more optimistic interpretation of the Halloween tee shirt.
“Don’t worry!” u/EnsignNogIsMyCat commented. “She’s just doing astral projection to get in the mood for Spooky Season!”
“Or perhaps it’s a ghost only wearing Minnie ears?” said u/QuesoArmadilla. “We can tell the Littles that.”
u/Scared-Use4402 thought the ghost makeover was a good look for Minnie Mouse:
“That Boo Sheet looks good on you, girl! 👻”
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse fans shouldn’t worry–one tee shirt certainly won’t mean the end for Minnie Mouse! Still, expect to see more unauthorized versions of the Disney icon. Early versions of Minnie and Mickey Mouse, including their first appearance together in Steamboat Willie, entered the public domain earlier this year.
