Michael Keaton’s Batman and Jack Nicholson’s Joker Return in Continuation of 1989 Film

When Michael Keaton first donned the cape and cowl in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989), he helped define a Gotham City that was stylish, foreboding, and unlike any previous cinematic incarnation. That world, continued in Batman Returns (1992), has influenced almost every major portrayal of the Dark Knight since, from comics to video games.

Now, that universe is finding new life again in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

TT Games and Warner Bros. Games have built a sprawling open-world Gotham that draws heavily on Burton’s vision while blending elements from across the character’s storied history. Players will assume the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, voiced by Shai Matheson, and confront classic Rogues’ Gallery villains including Bane and The Joker.

Legacy of the Dark Knight celebrates Batman’s cinematic legacy and, according to a new teaser, reimagines the Burton era, as we see the Clown Prince of Gotham in a re-creation of the iconic museum scene from Batman (1989), complete with the song Partyman by Prince. Watch the new trailer below:

James Gunn, DC Studios co-CEO, highlighted the ambition behind the Lego game, saying, “One of the many great things about LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is that it manifests all these different elements of Batman that we’ve loved over the years.”

That includes references to later interpretations, such as Robert Pattinson’s The Batman (2022), and nods to the Dark Knight trilogy.
