Recast ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Star Officially Joins ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be entering another carefully managed period of transition. Between reported departures, shifting creative directions, and a reshaped Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios appears to be steadily moving key pieces off the board while positioning new ones for the future.

A new report from industry insider Daniel Richtman suggests that Michael Peña’s beloved character Luis may have quietly reached the end of his MCU journey.

According to Richtman, Peña is “never coming back,” and he added that he is “not sure what happened” behind the scenes. Marvel Studios has not commented on the claim, but if accurate, it would represent a subdued exit for one of the Ant-Man franchise’s most distinctive supporting figures.

Luis, introduced in Ant-Man (2015), quickly became a standout presence thanks to Peña’s comedic delivery and his signature rapid-fire storytelling sequences. The character returned in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, but was notably absent from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), which first prompted questions about his status.

Director Peyton Reed previously addressed that absence, explaining that the Quantum Realm-focused narrative simply did not leave room for the character, noting that no version of the script included him. With this context, what once appeared to be a one-off omission is now being viewed by some as a possible permanent departure.

Peña may not be alone in potentially stepping away from the Ant-Man ensemble.

Michael Douglas, who portrayed Hank Pym across multiple MCU installments, has publicly suggested that he is winding down his acting career, casting uncertainty over any future return. Evangeline Lilly, who plays Hope van Dyne, has also indicated she is taking an extended break from Hollywood.

Together, these developments suggest a broader phase-out of the original Ant-Man supporting cast, a group that has been part of the MCU since its Phase Two expansion. Marvel’s long-term storytelling plans have also been forced into recalibration following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who had been positioned as Kang the Conqueror, the central antagonist of the Multiverse Saga.

After legal issues involving Majors, Marvel Studios officially severed ties with the actor. Kang, who debuted in Loki and played a major role in Quantumania, was initially intended to serve as the connective villain across multiple Avengers films.

With that storyline disrupted, Marvel has reportedly been restructuring its narrative roadmap, including reworking future crossover events and reconsidering the overarching threat driving the saga forward. While legacy characters appear to be stepping back, Marvel is simultaneously elevating newer additions to the franchise.

Kathryn Newton, who portrays Cassie Lang, is set to return in Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Her involvement surfaced via social media, where she appeared to receive a miniature production chair reminiscent of the viral MCU casting announcements.

Newton joined the franchise in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, taking over the role from Abby Ryder Fortson and Emma Fuhrmann, both of whom previously portrayed other versions of Cassie.

Although official plot details remain tightly guarded, Avengers: Doomsday is widely expected to serve as a major structural pivot point for the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. The film is anticipated to bring together characters from across multiple timelines and franchises, with Multiversal instability—such as incursions and collapsing realities—expected to play a central role.

Following the Kang storyline shift, Robert Downey Jr. is set to return in a new capacity as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom, who is now positioned as a key antagonist shaping the saga’s future direction. The move signals a significant recalibration of Marvel’s long-term narrative strategy as it seeks to stabilize momentum across its interconnected films.

Cassie Lang’s growing prominence reflects Marvel’s increasing focus on younger characters as potential anchors for the next phase of its storytelling. After taking on a more active heroic role in Quantumania, Cassie’s confirmed appearance in Avengers: Doomsday has fueled speculation that she could be part of a broader next-generation team structure within the MCU.

Taken together, these developments suggest that the Ant-Man franchise is undergoing a quiet but meaningful transformation.

With Michael Peña potentially exiting, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly stepping back, and Jonathan Majors no longer part of Marvel’s long-term plans, one of the MCU’s more established character clusters is gradually being dismantled.

At the same time, Kathryn Newton’s continued rise within the Avengers narrative signals where Marvel Studios is heading next: toward a reshaped ensemble built around newer characters and a revised central conflict. The studio is not starting over, but it is clearly reworking its foundation.
