Marvel Drops ‘Avengers’ Bombshell One Year Before ‘Doomsday’
Marvel’s next big swing arrives in 2026 as the Avengers assemble for their long-awaited return, and the franchise is leaning heavily on both nostalgia and reinvention to navigate a changing blockbuster landscape. With audiences still debating how Avengers: Endgame reshaped the MCU, one lingering ripple from that 2019 climax may finally circle back in a major way.

Following a few unpredictable box office years, Marvel Studios is steering toward a more focused slate. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) reminded the industry of the MCU’s staying power, while films like The Marvels (2023) and Thunderbolts* (2025) performed more modestly. The strategy now hinges on a two-film Avengers event designed to redirect the overall narrative.
Returning to lead the charge, the Russo Brothers are overseeing Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), treating the pair as a full-scale reset for the MCU’s next era.

Doomsday is set to fold together a massive roster, pairing MCU veterans like Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Anthony Mackie’s Captain America with major figures from the former Fox-era X-Men universe. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen’s comeback as Professor X and Magneto signals a more direct dive into the Multiverse.
And in one of the most talked-about shifts, Robert Downey Jr. returns not as Tony Stark but as Victor Von Doom. Introduced during the post-credits of The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), this Phase Six version of Doom is rumored to take an anti-hero route that complicates the Avengers’ Multiversal plans.

Both Avengers installments were moved from May to December debuts, a window Disney has increasingly dominated with its biggest tentpoles. With Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) hitting the same corridor, the studio appears ready to stack several holiday-season juggernauts back-to-back.
Doomsday buzz suggests Doom’s arrival may carry more emotional weight than fans expected. Rumors claim Downey’s take on the character is shaped by the death of his wife and son, victims of an accident that left him scarred.
More surprising is the whispered cause: fallout from Steve Rogers’ timeline-altering actions in Avengers: Endgame. If accurate, the conflict in Doomsday becomes a direct consequence of the Avengers’ earlier attempt to fix the universe.

The approach frames Doom less as an overlord and more as someone forged through grief and anger—an angle the MCU has used effectively before. It also lines up with the Russo Brothers and writer Stephen McFeely’s goal of raising both the dramatic scale and visual spectacle while juggling a sprawling roster.
Other rumors tease multiple Doom variants and an even broader Multiversal clash, fueling speculation over how this interpretation might shift future MCU storylines.
Marvel Studios also confirmed Endgame will return to theaters ahead of Doomsday—news that arrives amid industry shakeups tied to the Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery merger.

“Welcome back to the endgame,” Marvel.com shared. “Marvel Studios has announced that the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame is returning to theaters for an exclusive re-release beginning September 25, 2026.”
“Originally released on April 26, 2019, Avengers: Endgame shattered box office records, earning the biggest opening weekend of all time with a global haul of $1.2 billion,” Marvel continued. “Endgame stands as the second-highest grossing film of all time domestically with $858 million and the second-highest grossing film of all time globally with a $2.799 billion total.”

Doomsday Update
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed new details about the film’s timetable.
“AGBO and the Russos are in post-production on Avengers: Doomsday, with additional photography expected to take place in the spring before cameras roll on Avengers: Secret Wars in the summer,” the outlet wrote.
With reshoots set just before Secret Wars begins, Doomsday’s ending remains fluid—potentially altering how the film sets up the next chapter. Speculation is mounting that the escalating Multiverse storyline could claim major casualties, with names like Thor, Captain Marvel, and Bucky Barnes surfacing as possibilities.
