Marvel Debuts New ‘Deadpool’ Actor, Ryan Reynolds Officially Replaced

Ryan Reynolds will forever be associated with Deadpool. Marvel’s fourth-wall-breaking, potty-mouthed anti-hero was catapulted into pop culture infamy with 2016’s Deadpool, which, at the same time, absolutely cemented the Canadian actor as a household name.

The 2016 film wasn’t Reynolds’ first rodeo as the character, of course — he first played him in Wolverine: X-Men Origins (2009). But the less said about that, the better. He returned in 2018’s Deadpool 2, and in last year’s box-office hit Deadpool & Wolverine.

The 2024 film marked the character’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it seemed Deadpool was here to stay. Deadpool & Wolverine, which saw Reynolds team up with Hugh Jackman, clawed $1.338 billion out of the global box office.

So, surely Disney would want to bring these characters back in, say, the upcoming superhero epic Avengers: Doomsday (2026), right? Wrong — neither Reynolds nor Jackman are part of the extensive cast (at least not yet — there’s always room for major cameos).

Doomsday is being directed by the Russo brothers, who previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Tony Stark/Iron Man actor/legend Robert Downey Jr. is also back, this time as the villain character Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom.

Actors returning from previous films include (but are certainly not limited to) Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Letitia Wright (Shuri/Black Panther), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm / The Thing), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic).

There are even some big names from non-MCU Marvel movies: Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier/Professor X from X-Men (who also appeared in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Kelsey Grammer’s Hank McCoy/Beast from some of the earlier X-Men films (who also had a cameo at the end of 2023’s The Marvels).

Several other X-Men actors and their respective characters will also have their MCU debut in the film: Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, and James Marsden as Scott Summers Cyclops. Even Channing Tatum’s Remy LeBeau/Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine will return. But what about Deadpool and Wolverine themselves?

Doomsday is set to be the MCU’s biggest movie since 2019’s Endgame, but the Merc With a Mouth and the adamantium-clawed mutant are nowhere to be seen.

Instead, for now at least, it seems Deadpool and Wolverine are being used in other media. Logan is getting his own game with Insomniac’s upcoming “Marvel’s Wolverine”, in which he’ll be played by a new actor.

The same goes for Wade Wilson, whose new “hack-and-slash” single player game, “Deadpool VR” for Meta Quest 3 and 3S, arrives today, November 18.

But, as you may have already heard, Ryan Reynolds isn’t involved — despite the uncanny similarity in how they sound, Deadpool is voiced by Neil Patrick Harris, best known for the hit American sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

Reviews are currently being churned out as we speak — you can check IGN’s here.

As for Reynolds, whether or not he’ll return on the big screen remains to be seen. He spoke about his future as the character last year while promoting Deadpool & Wolverine, telling Collider that he’s unlikely to do a fourth film, saying, “Right now’s the time to just kind of hang it up [the suit] for a bit and see what happens next.”

Would you like to see Deadpool return to the MCU? Or do you think Neil Patrick Harris could also play the character in live action? Sound off in the comments!

  1. You do this I will never watch any of these new movies. You need to get rid of these gay and woke directors. Do whatever it to get the original actors back.

    1. I agree! When the directors mess around with the original characters and storylines, the audience starts wondering, where’s this going or what happened to my favorite characters! They did the same thing to Star Wars! Before the movie giants wondered what happened, the movies were gone!

  2. Disney is the most powerful superhero in all the multiverse.
They EFFORTLESSLY wiped out ALL Marvel superheros with their mystical superpower of ” WOKE “.

  3. Hi:
I don’t want to see New Deadpool 4. What would Neill Patrick Harris going to play what new movie?
