Mark Hamill Breaks Silence on the Next Era of ‘Star Wars’

Mark Hamill may no longer be playing Luke Skywalker, but the actor remains closely connected to the galaxy far, far away. As Lucasfilm prepares for a new era of films and Disney+ series, Hamill has offered his candid thoughts about who should guide the future of Star Wars.

Few actors are as synonymous with a single character as Hamill is with Luke Skywalker. Introduced in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) — then simply titled Star Wars — Luke began as a restless farm boy on Tatooine before growing into one of the saga’s most powerful Jedi.

Across the original trilogy, Hamill helped anchor George Lucas’ sprawling space epic. Luke’s transformation from idealistic dreamer to disciplined Jedi Knight became the emotional spine of the franchise and helped define the modern blockbuster era.

The character returned decades later during the sequel trilogy. Hamill appeared briefly in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) before taking on a far larger role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), where the aging Jedi confronted the failures of his past.

That portrayal proved divisive among fans. Some viewers praised director Rian Johnson for pushing the mythology in a new direction, while others argued that the hopeful hero of the original trilogy had been turned into a reluctant recluse.

Hamill later returned to the franchise in smaller ways. The actor appeared as a Force ghost in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and was digitally recreated as a younger Luke Skywalker in Disney+ series including The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

Still, Hamill has made it clear that his time in the role is finished. In 2025, he told ComicBook.com, “I had my time.”

That does not mean he has stopped paying attention to the direction of the franchise.

Mark Hamill Backs Dave Filoni as a Key Architect of Star Wars

During a recent interview with USA Today, Hamill praised Dave Filoni’s growing influence within Lucasfilm, suggesting that the longtime creative executive is the right person to help shape the franchise’s next chapter.

Hamill said he “can’t think of better hands” for Star Wars, adding that Filoni understands the mythology of the saga “so well.”

He also pointed to Filoni’s long creative partnership with George Lucas. “George was a mentor to Dave, so he knows George’s sensibility.”

Lucas personally hired Filoni in 2005 to help develop Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Over time, Filoni became one of the most important storytellers in the franchise, later contributing to animated series such as Star Wars Rebels and live-action projects including The Mandalorian.

Filoni now serves as Lucasfilm’s chief creative officer and co-president alongside Lynwen Brennan. His growing role places him at the center of the studio’s future plans across television, film, and streaming.

The latest project emerging from that creative era is Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The upcoming series draws inspiration from ideas originally discussed between Filoni and George Lucas.

Speaking to StarWars.com, Filoni said the project reflects those earlier conversations about the character.

“Maul is a character that’s our responsibility,” Filoni said. “George [Lucas] and I had had some talks about Maul over the years and what his plans for Maul had been. And so I felt it was a way of honoring that future that we were going to have and finally bringing some of it to light.”

Filoni has long played a key role in shaping Darth Maul’s expanded story. After the character’s debut in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), Maul returned in both The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, where Filoni helped expand his legacy.

Lucasfilm’s next theatrical release will also come from the same creative circle. The Mandalorian & Grogu is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 22, 2026.

Luke Skywalker’s Legacy Still Looms Over the Franchise

Even with Hamill stepping away from the role, Luke Skywalker remains one of the most important figures in the broader Star Wars timeline.

Large portions of the character’s story remain unexplored on screen. The period between Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983) and The Force Awakens offers decades of narrative space for new stories about Luke rebuilding the Jedi Order.

Some fans have suggested that Lucasfilm could simply recast a younger Luke Skywalker for future projects. Others believe the studio may continue using digital de-aging technology or animation to explore that era without replacing Hamill entirely.

There is also the possibility that Luke could still appear in spiritual form. Daisy Ridley is expected to return as Rey in a future Star Wars film, prompting speculation that Luke might reappear as a Force ghost guiding the next generation of Jedi.

Whether or not the film actually comes to fruition is a more pressing question, with several screenwriters joining and exiting the project over the years.
