Magic Kingdom’s Villains Land Won’t Open Until 2029 at the Earliest
Magic Kingdom is getting ready to welcome Disney’s most notorious characters into their own massive land.
Just don’t expect it to happen anytime soon.
Disney delivered a substantial Villains Land update during D23 2026, revealing its official name, storyline, attractions, and the unusual design philosophy Imagineers are using to create it.
But there was one glaring omission from the presentation: an opening timeline.

Disney still hasn’t announced when Villains Land will welcome its first guests. Looking at the scope of the project and Magic Kingdom’s other construction plans, 2029 currently appears to be the earliest reasonable opening year.
And even that may prove optimistic.
Disney Has Big Plans for Villains Land
Villains Land won’t simply add another attraction to Magic Kingdom.
Disney has described an enormous expansion featuring restaurants, shops, elaborate environments, and two headlining rides.
The first will put Maleficent at the center of a new coaster experience. Guests will race through enchanted briar surrounding her fortress, with Imagineers promising ride elements they haven’t attempted on similar projects before.
Another attraction will take guests beneath the Evil Queen’s palace to encounter the Magic Mirror.
From there, riders will enter the Mirror Realm, where Disney plans to use physical sets and special effects to bring numerous villains into the experience.
Disney has compared the land’s overall scale to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Building something that ambitious takes time.
Another Magic Kingdom Expansion Comes First
Villains Land also isn’t being developed in isolation.
Magic Kingdom is already undergoing a dramatic transformation as Disney develops Piston Peak National Park in the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island area.
We expect Piston Peak to potentially open around 2028, although Disney’s future construction schedules can always change.
That makes Villains Land a logical candidate to follow.
If Piston Peak debuts in 2028, the earliest realistic window for Villains Land could begin in late 2029. A 2030 opening may ultimately be more likely, with 2031 remaining possible depending on construction.
None of those Villains Land dates have been confirmed by Disney.

The Wait Could Be Worth It
Imagineers aren’t simply recreating locations from existing Disney stories.
They’ve developed an original mythology involving a corrupted Wishing Well and villains using its dark magic to create their own fortresses and palaces.
Disney is even developing a distinct visual approach called “Conjured Architecture,” drawing inspiration from Art Nouveau and Modernisme.
That ambition makes Villains Land one of Disney World’s most fascinating upcoming projects.
We finally know much more about what Disney is building.
Now comes the long wait.
Unless Disney significantly accelerates the project, 2029 appears to be the earliest Villains Land could realistically open, with 2030 currently looking like the year to watch.
