‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Delivers an Unexpected Answer to a Long-Standing Mystery

For years, Jurassic Park III (2001) has left us scratching our heads over one particular mystery: the boat attack that opens the film.

It’s a scene that shows two characters (Eric Kirby and his stepfather Ben Hildebrand) parasailing, only to watch in horror as their boat crew on the water below disappears, leaving behind only bloody streaks on the deck. The creature behind the attack was never shown, and for over two decades, fans have been left wondering—which dinosaur did it?

Now, with the release of the upcoming sequel Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), it seems we might finally have an answer.

Jurassic World Rebirth, set to hit theaters in July, brings back the Spinosaurus in a way that may help explain this mystery. In one of the film’s most thrilling sequences, several Spinosaurs—joined by the ocean-dwelling Mosasaurus—are seen attacking a sailing boat on the island’s coast, with Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) and her team onboard.

For many, this will undoubtedly evoke memories of the boat incident from Jurassic Park III—but this time, it seems the filmmakers are leaving nothing to the imagination. Watch the official trailer for the upcoming film below (the scene in question is right at the end):

In the 2001 film, the boat crew was attacked and killed off-screen, and the mystery surrounding it has always been a point of confusion for fans. Now, it’s possible the filmmakers are willing to connect the dots and give us the closure we’ve been waiting for.

As already revealed in Jurassic Park III, the Spinosaurus wasn’t just a land predator—it hunted Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and the other characters on the Site B river, so it could easily have been the same creature that caused the chaos on the sea at the beginning of the film. While many fans believe the Pteranodons killed the boat crew, this makes no sense as the flying reptiles aren’t released from the Aviary until much later in the film.
