A new Jurassic Park animated short has dropped, and it’s a bit darker than you might expect, especially compared to Netflix’s Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Season 2.

The YouTube channel InGen 2D brings us this thrilling new short, which is based on Michael Crichton’s original novel rather than Spielberg’s 1993 classic. Though unofficial, this latest short re-creates the tense Tyrannosaurus Rex attack scene, where our favorite characters, Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm, find themselves at the mercy of the escaped prehistoric beast.

One of the most notable aspects of InGen 2D’s work is how closely it sticks to the novel. Crichton’s book, while similar in many ways to the film, had a much bleaker tone and wasn’t afraid to dive into more graphic territory.

InGen 2D is known for honoring that darker vision of Jurassic Park, and this latest short is no exception. It’s similar to the channel’s previous work, such as “The Fate of Dennis Nedry,” which showcased a more brutal version of the titular InGen employee’s demise, sticking closer to the novel’s details than Spielberg’s interpretation did.

Even though it’s animated, “The Main Road” captures the suspense of the original film and the novel, bringing fans something a bit more gritty. But could this mean we’ll see a darker side to the Jurassic franchise in the future? With R-rated content proving increasingly popular in film, never say never.

For those following the Jurassic franchise, there’s more on the horizon. There’s the upcoming video game “Jurassic Park: Survival,” expected sometime next year, and the third entry in the “Jurassic World Evolution” series.

But what really has fans excited is the upcoming live-action sequel, Jurassic World Rebirth, set for release in July 2025. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the cast features big names like Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali.

Per the official synopsis, Jurassic World Rebirth takes place “five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion” to find that “the planet’s ecology has proven inhospitable to dinosaurs,” adding that “those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived.” Scarlett Johansson’s character, a covert operations expert named Zora Bennett, is “contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetical material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs” that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”

It’s an exciting time to be a Jurassic Park fan, whether you’re into these intense new animated takes or waiting for the next big-screen thrill. Could this animated short signal a shift in the tone of the franchise? Only time will tell.
