Disney Suddenly Changes Exterior of Historic Haunted Mansion Attraction

Walt Disney World Resort’s Haunted Mansion is currently undergoing an unexpected change, as construction walls have been built around part of the attraction’s exterior.

The Haunted Mansion, which debuted alongside Magic Kingdom Park in 1971, is one of the most iconic attractions in Disney Parks’ history. It follows the success of Disneyland Resort’s Haunted Mansion, which opened in 1969. Over the years, the Haunted Mansion has inspired several international versions, including an attraction of the same name at Tokyo Disneyland, the Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland’s Mystic Manor.

On Wednesday, WDWMagic reported that the construction walls appeared around the carriage and hearse display near the Haunted Mansion’s entrance. The short brown walls suggest a more limited refurbishment, likely focused on concrete work or other minor changes. Unlike more extensive refurbishments typically hidden behind taller walls, the low barriers point to a smaller-scale project.

Though the construction has altered the exterior of the attraction, the Haunted Mansion ride itself is still operating. Guests can still experience the spooky thrills inside, and the queue remains mostly unaffected by the ongoing changes. Walt Disney World Resort has yet to announce an official end date for this refurbishment, so fans will have to stay tuned for further updates.

This change follows closely behind recent refurbishments at Disneyland Resort, where the Haunted Mansion queue, plaza area, and gift shop were all given a facelift. While these updates have mostly been well-received, Disneyland’s new Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond merchandise location sparked controversy. Guests voiced their displeasure with the store’s exterior design, which many compared to a Home Depot shed. Additionally, there was backlash when it was revealed that AI-generated art had been used inside the store. Disney responded quickly, removing the artwork from the location.
