‘Harry Potter’ TV Series Faces Major Setback, According to Report

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation, which plans to retell J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga across multiple seasons, is shaping up to be one of the network’s most ambitious projects.

Season 1 is currently filming on a purpose-built set in Leavesden near Watford, close to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, where the original film series was produced.

HBO’s Harry Potter Has a Huge Ensemble Cast

Unsurprisingly, the new show features a huge ensemble cast led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

Veteran actors include John Lithgow (Albus Dumbledore), Nick Frost (Rubeus Hagrid), Janet McTeer (Minerva McGonagall), Katherine Parkinson (Molly Weasley), Paapa Essiedu (Severus Snape), and Paul Whitehouse (Argus Filch).

Behind the camera, Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and executive producer. Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes while also producing alongside Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.

The series is expected to span multiple seasons, with the first installment currently targeting a 2027 premiere on HBO and HBO Max.

Production Reportedly Hit With Bullying Claims

However, while the series has already faced plenty of controversy, with backlash from trans rights activists due to Rowling’s involvement as an executive producer, as well as fan criticism toward the casting of diverse actors such as Paapa Essiedu as Snape and Jazmyn Lewin as Susan Bones, a recent report now claims that production has also faced some serious challenges during filming.

According to The Sun, tensions have surfaced among cast members and extras on set. The outlet alleges that two 12-year-old extras were seen fighting, with one reportedly shouting, “I’m going to get you after filming.”

A source told the publication that conflicts can occur on such a large production. “There are a lot of youngsters on set at any one time, and the reality is that not everyone is going to get on,” the source said.

The report also claims the production team has introduced measures designed to address behavior concerns among both adults and younger performers.

“It’s an alarming problem, and bosses want to get rid of any bad eggs among the cast and crew,” the source added. “Bosses have issued warnings about behavior. The bullying accusations have involved adults and children.”

According to the source, producers have adopted a zero-tolerance stance toward misconduct. “It has been made clear that anyone reported for bullying will be immediately axed — no matter how famous they may be,” the source said. “Filming is going to last eight years and bosses are adamant that any inappropriate behavior must be nipped in the bud.”

The report further states that staff members have received guidance on how to report concerns and that the production is offering “free online counseling and coaching sessions for all cast and crew and access to wellbeing resources.”

Warner Bros. has declined to comment on the claims, according to The Sun.

Despite the scrutiny surrounding the project, production continues on what HBO hopes will become a decade-long television adaptation of the beloved fantasy series.
