‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Might Not Be “Faithful Adaption” After All
HBO’s long-gestating Harry Potter reboot is now in production, and beyond its headline promise of adapting one book per season, the studio also appears to be aligning its continuity with other corners of the wizarding world.

Casting for the upcoming series has already confirmed several key roles, with Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger), and Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter) leading an extensive cast that also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
Behind the scenes, Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and producer David Heyman are also attached.
While the show effectively resets the film continuity established by Warner Bros., a 2024 report indicated that the new series may share narrative DNA with Hogwarts Legacy.

The open-world title, set in the late 1800s, predates Harry Potter’s time at Hogwarts by roughly a century. Though removed from the main saga’s timeline, executives have suggested that future installments of the game are coordinating broader story elements with the television reboot.
In November 2024, Variety reported that Hogwarts Legacy 2 will share elements of its plot with the HBO series, with David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, revealing that the video game sequel’s team had been coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements with storylines expected to feature in the reboot.
That raises the possibility of overlapping lore, historical callbacks, or even shared mythological threads between both eras. Meanwhile, leaked set images of the HBO production on Reddit have prompted online comparisons to environments seen in the game, though structural similarities are inevitable given the shared setting.
The series, which is expected to span seven seasons across a decade, is being positioned as a more faithful take on J. K. Rowling’s novels. However, if it does feature connections or cameos relating to Hogwarts Legacy and even Fantastic Beasts, this could anger purists who were promised a faithful adaptation of the books.
Harry Potter Season 1 is targeting a 2027 premiere. There’s no release date for Hogwarts Legacy 2.
