‘Harry Potter’ Actor Making Shock Franchise Return, Will Play Malfoy Again

One of Harry Potter‘s most beloved stars is officially returning to the franchise.

While it’s been well over two decades since the Harry Potter franchise first hit theaters, its stars are still renowned for their roles in the wizarding world. The upcoming HBO reboot may have unveiled its new cast, but to many, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint will always be Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

For years, rumors have swirled that the cast could resume their roles in a film adaptation of the stage show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This follows the characters decades after the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, with the original young actors conveniently now around the right age to convincingly play the parts.

In the wake of the backlash against JK Rowling and her views on the transgender community, that seems increasingly unlikely. Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint have all spoken out against Rowling’s opinions, with the author in turn shading the trio on social media (repeatedly).

One actor, however, has confirmed that they are reprising their role – just not on the big screen.

Tom Felton Confirms ‘Harry Potter’ Return

Tom Felton – who played Harry’s Hogwarts nemesis, Draco Malfoy, in the films and has made no secret of his enthusiasm to pursue more Harry Potter projects – is set to go back to the wizarding world for a 19-week engagement in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway.

The news dropped today, confirming that Felton will start performances at the Lyric Theatre in New York City on November 11 and continue in the role through March 22, 2026. This marks the first time that a member of the original film cast has reprised the role onstage.

“It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes – and of course his iconic platinum blond hair – and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world,” Felton said in a statement.

“Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honours of my life,” he added. “Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.”

Felton also shared an Instagram video to mark his return. In it, he once again wore Draco Malfoy’s iconic icy blonde hair while asking, “Scared, Potter?”

The producers of the Broadway production, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, shared a joint statement expressing their excitement to see Felton back in the role. “It’s not lost on us that this is a cultural moment charged with nostalgia, evolution, and emotion,” they said. “Tom’s return to Hogwarts bridges generations of fans and breathes new life into a beloved story. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Tom back ‘home’ but also into a new family: our Broadway company.”
