HBO’s New ‘Harry Potter’ Series Could Have a Negative Impact on Universal Studios’ Attractions

The new Harry Potter television series is officially in development at HBO, with a 10-year plan to re-adapt all seven books by J.K. Rowling. But while Warner Bros. Discovery is betting big on the long-term success of the reboot, its release could pose an interesting challenge for the attractions and themed lands at Universal Studios.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has been a cornerstone of Universal’s theme parks since 2010. From Hogsmeade to Diagon Alley and the upcoming Ministry of Magic and wizarding Paris areas at Epic Universe, every attraction is deeply tied to the look, feel, and characters of the original films.

But the growing controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling, and the division it has caused among fans and cast members alike, continues to cast a shadow over the brand.

Rowling, who’s an executive producer on the HBO series, has faced widespread backlash for statements regarding transgender people. The reboot, while intended as a fresh start for the Harry Potter franchise, is already mired in debate about whether Rowling’s involvement will impact its reception.

But, if the series is a success like Warner Bros. and HBO are obviously hoping it will be, it could reshape how theme parks approach the Harry Potter brand altogether.

As the series reintroduces the Wizarding World to a new generation, Universal may eventually be faced with a dilemma: stick with the familiar faces and locations and aesthetic of the films, or pivot to align with the new show’s new look and cast?

It’s not just hypothetical. The new Ministry of Magic land in Epic Universe already breaks slightly from tradition by drawing from the Fantastic Beasts films as opposed to the main series of films. A full shift to HBO’s interpretation could follow, especially if the reboot becomes a cultural touchstone in its own right.

For now, Universal Studios’ parks remain loyal to the original eight films, which continue to resonate with fans worldwide. But as the new show gains traction, the parks may one day be forced to reimagine the Wizarding World entirely.
