Gina Carano Return Rumors Ignite as ‘Mandalorian’ Era Faces Changes
Gina Carano says she has spoken directly with Lucasfilm about returning to Star Wars, reopening a conversation that had largely been considered closed.
The actress, who played Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, confirmed the discussions in a recent interview, pointing to a renewed line of communication with the franchise’s current creative leadership.

Her update lands as Star Wars continues to recalibrate its film and television strategy, with several previously reported projects either delayed, canceled, or reworked.
That broader uncertainty has placed renewed focus on legacy characters tied to The Mandalorian, one of the franchise’s most commercially successful recent entries.
Return Talks Surface as Franchise Strategy Shifts
Gina Carano said she connected with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau to discuss where her character could fit into future storytelling.

“We got onto a Zoom call,” Carano said during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show. “It was really nice. Dave is taking over as CEO of ‘Star Wars.’ We didn’t miss a beat. Jon Favreau got on Zoom and was really funny. He was like, ‘So, where did we leave off?'”
Cara Dune was positioned as a central figure in early plans for the post-Return of the Jedi timeline, including a proposed spinoff series that was later scrapped.
Her absence has remained notable as the so-called “MandoVerse” expanded, even as newer seasons drew a more mixed reception compared to the show’s early success.
Lucasfilm is now preparing to bring that storyline to theaters with The Mandalorian & Grogu, marking a shift from streaming to film for the property.
Early tracking suggests a softer opening than previous Star Wars films, adding pressure to a franchise already navigating changing audience expectations.
What Comes Next?
Carano’s departure in 2021 followed a series of social media controversies that drew widespread criticism. Lucasfilm announced at the time that her posts were “abhorrent and unacceptable.”
She later took legal action against The Walt Disney Company and continued to speak publicly about her exit, keeping the situation in the spotlight long after her final appearance.
The reaction to a potential return remains sharply divided.

Some fans argue her exit coincided with a decline in interest in The Mandalorian, suggesting the series lost momentum without the character. “The Mandalorian fell off a cliff as soon as Disney canned her,” one X, formerly known as Twitter, user wrote.
Others have taken the opposite view, pushing back against the idea entirely. “[Lucasfilm] bend[s] over backwards to please the most toxic faction of the fandom,” another user wrote, questioning whether her return would serve the broader audience.
Online responses reflect both extremes, with calls for her return matched by equally strong opposition.
Lucasfilm has not announced any official plans to bring Carano back, and she is not expected to appear in The Mandalorian & Grogu.
