Giant Third-Ton Bed Collapses on Disney Hotel Guest, Trapping Her Under Its Weight
A trip to the Central Florida Disney parks is on the yearly to-do lists (and countless bucket lists) of millions of people all over the world. The magic, beauty, thrills, and food are just a few of the things that seem to beckon guests to visit Disney World–and then to return again and again.
But when an exciting Disney vacation includes a terrifying ordeal at a Disney World Resort hotel, the previously magical getaway that was supposed to allow guests the chance to rekindle the flame with their inner child can become anything but magical.
A Sweet Disney Vacation Turns Sour
For one Disney World fan, trips to the parks in Florida have become a family tradition–a tradition that began years ago.
Sara, who goes by the name @ss4rax on TikTok, has visited Disney World numerous times. In fact, the now-22-year-old and her family visit the parks regularly. When they plan a trip to Disney World, their plans almost always include a stay at one of the resort’s beautiful hotels.
But during a recent trip to the Central Florida Disney Resort, something that Sara has done for years suddenly became problematic. In fact, you might even say she’s blessed to be alive following a stay at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort.
In a now-removed video on TikTok, Sara detailed the traumatic experience she had in the middle of the night when she suddenly heard the sounds of “wood ripping” coming from the wall of her resort hotel room.
Before she could do anything to prevent a serious injury, Sara was suddenly trapped as the 600-pound bed collapsed, trapping her inside. Sara recounted the terrifying experience, saying:
I knew I wasn’t going to be able to scream unless I got out, so with adrenaline, I ripped my head and my chest out. The whole thing came collapsing back down on my right arm. Adrenaline kicked in. It hurt so bad, but I needed to scream.
Sara was left with extensive bruising and pain in her arm.
Sadly, it’s not the first incident involving a wall-mounted or Murphy-style bed to be experienced by guests at the Walt Disney World Resort.
Disney World Issues a Terrifying Warning to Guests
Disney World welcomed its first guests to spend the night at Disney’s Riviera Resort on December 16, 2019.
The resort’s European theming, which takes its inspiration from the Italian and French Rivieras, as well as its offering of character dining experiences, quick-service venues, and its proximity to Disney World’s theme parks and to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, quickly made the beautiful new resort a favorite among guests.
Bonus points were awarded to the resort because of its listing among the stops along Disney’s Skyliner route.
But just days after celebrating its grand opening, Disney’s Riviera Resort issued a warning to guests that involved the resort’s brand-new wall-mounted bed located at the Disney Vacation Club villas at the resort.
During the Christmas holidays, the resort reportedly asked guests to refrain from using the wall-mounted Murphy-style beds in the villas. The resort used posted signs and hotel room voicemail to make the announcement to guests.
Some guests were even told they needed to pack up their rooms and prepare to be moved to different rooms or–in some cases–a different resort hotel entirely, creating a frustrating inconvenience for everyone involved. Per the announcement, the wall-mounted beds at Disney’s Riviera Resort had been deemed unsafe.
In early January 2020, guests were finally able to use the beds once again, but the resort encouraged guests who had concerns about the beds to contact Disney World or their respective Authorized Disney Vacation Planners to share those concerns and request a change in their accommodations.
Were Disney’s Murphy-Style Beds Installed Improperly?
You might think that such an issue with a wall-mounted bed would have had to be caused by some type of precipitating event, such as a guest jumping onto the bed or having too many guests on the bed.
But Sara’s father inspected the wall-mounted bed in her resort hotel room and was convinced that “it was installed incorrectly.”
Though one report says that Disney’s wall-mounted beds are only for children, Sara says that she has slept on beds like the one at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort since she was 13 years old and has never had an experience in which one of the beds collapsed on her.
Though many who commented on Sara’s viral video about the collapsed bed encouraged her to sue Disney World, Sara says that her family spoke to an attorney who told them that they didn’t have enough of a case.
The resort ultimately offered Sara’s family passes for rides and attractions, a partial room credit on their final bill, and tables at a few of Disney World’s most difficult-to-score dining reservations.
Other Wall-Mounted Fixtures Nearly Miss Disney Guests
Sadly, it isn’t only wall-mounted beds that have caused issues for guests visiting a Disney Parks Resort.
In 2023, guests staying at the Explorers Hotel, a Disneyland Paris Partner hotel, were shocked when a heavy wooden console and television that were supposedly mounted to the wall came crashing down to the floor in the middle of the night.
Though Explorers Hotel isn’t a Disney Resort Hotel, the hotel offers free shuttle service to Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park at the Parisian Disney resort.
Disneyland Paris has also awarded the hotel a multi-star rating and offers park ticket packages that include Explorers Hotel as an option in accommodations.
