Frontierland Revived? Disney Cancels Change to Original Magic Kingdom Area

A key part of Frontierland has returned to Magic Kingdom Park after being missing for over three months. This refurbishment comes amid a widespread transformation in Walt Disney World Resort’s original Old West area.

Frontierland already looks a lot different. Last year, the original Splash Mountain and Country Bear Jamboree attractions closed for rethemes: Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the Country Bear Musical Jamboree. Walt Disney World Resort also demolished the Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade and replaced it with a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) lounge, which opened this year.

And more is coming. At D23 Expo 2024, Chairman of Disney Experiences Josh D’Amaro revealed that two all-new Cars (2006) attractions would replace Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America in Frontierland. The Pixar-themed attractions will differ from those in Cars Land at Disneyland Resort’s Disney California Adventure Park.

He also announced the addition of a Disney Villains land “beyond Big Thunder Mountain.” The 44-year-old mine train roller coaster is currently undergoing a year-long refurbishment that will add “new magic” to delight guests during the Cars and Disney Villains construction. Closing dates haven’t been announced for Tom Sawyer Island or the Liberty Square Riverboat, but early permits have been filed for demolition in the Frontierland area.

Amid all this change, Walt Disney World Resort is refurbishing some smaller parts of Magic Kingdom Park’s Frontierland. In late January, the “Passage to Frontierland” sign disappeared from the walkway between Adventureland and Frontierland, closest to Tortuga Tavern and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Over three months later, the refurbished sign has returned to Magic Kingdom Park. According to WDWMagic, the wooden hanging sign once again graces the walkway between the two lands.

Whether it’s a new sign or the old sign repainted, it features the same design as the original. One side reads “Passage to Frontierland,” and the other says “Adventureland.”

Walt Disney World Resort rarely makes announcements about minor refurbishments like this one, and this instance was no exception. Keep an eye on Disney Dining for updates on other construction projects around the Disney parks!
