Flames Erupt Beneath Disney World Ride as Guests Watch

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the PeopleMover is a national treasure. Okay, a Magic Kingdom treasure. Since July 1, 1975, this slow, breezy ride has been floating guests above Tomorrowland, through Space Mountain, past Buzz Lightyear, and under the Astro Orbiter.

It started life as the WEDway PeopleMover and became the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover in 1994. No matter what you call it, it’s the ride fans turn to when their feet hurt, the sun is beating down, or they just want a little peace and quiet.

Peace, however, was not on the menu this weekend.

A video posted to Instagram by The Florida Pickers shows a fire breaking out right below the PeopleMover’s track. And somehow, the flames aren’t even the wildest part of the clip.

What We Know (and What We Don’t)

Here’s the situation so far, based on the video and what fans in the park are saying.

What we know:

  • A fire broke out beneath the PeopleMover’s elevated track in Tomorrowland.
  • The video shows smoke and an open flame.
  • Cast members escorted guests through the underpass under the ride track, away from the fire.
  • Plenty of other guests stayed right where they were, standing around the fire.
  • The ride does not appear to have been damaged, and one commenter in the park reported the PeopleMover was running normally.

What we don’t know:

  • What caused the fire.
  • Exactly what was burning.
  • Whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether Disney will comment. As of this writing, we haven’t seen an official statement.

And the Comment Section Awards Go To…

The internet had thoughts. A lot of them. Here are our favorites, handed out award-show style.

Best Social Science Pitch: “Someone needs to study how people respond to fires in Disney. One time I was at Ohana while the fire alarms were going off and literally no one moved a muscle. The servers had to come around to tell people they actually had to evacuate 🙃”

Most Accurate Description of the Video: “People just standing under it 😂”

Best Room With a View: “I was staying at Yacht Club last year when the fire broke out behind France in Epcot. I got great photos from my hotel room.”

Detective of the Day: “Maybe from the birds’ nests there? I’ve seen them every time I’ve been there waiting in line.” (Quick note: this is a fan theory, not a confirmed cause.)

Peak Disney Fan Energy: “Yikes! If everyone is ok, get a people mover pin for the memory.”

Live From Tomorrowland: “Currently here. People Mover is movin along just fine.”

Wait, Hasn’t This Happened Before?

Kind of, yes. The PeopleMover has a surprisingly smoky résumé.

Back on January 2, 2020, smoke poured down the ride’s entrance ramp and guests were evacuated. The PeopleMover and Astro Orbiter both closed until the Reedy Creek Fire Department finished an inspection, and then reopened. No official cause was released at the time.

In February 2022, fire alarms at Space Mountain triggered evacuations there and shut down the PeopleMover, which runs right through that building. That one turned out to be a false alarm. Reedy Creek firefighters said a smoking break room fridge set it off.

And just this past June, a viral TikTok appeared to show flames near the PeopleMover.

To be clear, there’s nothing to suggest any of these incidents are connected. It’s just a strange pattern for a ride known as one of the most relaxing things in Tomorrowland.

Our PSA, Then Your Turn

Quick public service announcement before we go. If you ever spot smoke or flames at the parks, skip the front-row seat. Follow the cast members, keep moving, and let the professionals handle it. You can always watch the video later.

The good news is that the PeopleMover looks like it made it through just fine. We’ll update this story if Disney shares what caused the fire.

Now we’re dying to know. Would you have been one of the guests heading for the underpass, or one of the ones standing there taking it all in? Be honest! Sound off in the comments, and while you’re at it, tell us the strangest thing you’ve ever seen happen at Magic Kingdom.
